Notes for D
ARCUS WINNINGHAM:
I have no proof that Darcus is the daughter of Abraham Winningham, there is speculation that her maiden name could have been Black. There is speculation that Darcus may be the daughter of Chief Nettle Carrier, not the granddaughter, but if Darcus was born in 1812, she would have to be a granddaughter, since Nettle Carrier was killed in 1793. Darcus was always keeping one foot ahead of the law and Army in order to escape the forced Trail of Tears March to Oklahoma. She was in town at Overton County, Tennessee with her daughter, when an Army Officier approached her and commented "you appear to be Cherokee", thinking fast she answered " I am Black Dutch, sir", the officer allows her to go. The rest of that day she spent going home in a round about way, she tells her husband, he sells their farm and loads tha wagon and they move to Kentucky. This story was told by Darcus's daughter, Sarah Jane Roberts. Sarah Jane held on to a cow tail all night, stumbling along in the dark barefoot on the trip.

She was also called Granny Dark. It is believed that Darcus Winningham's mother was the daughter of Cherokee Indian Chief Nettle Carrier. It is also believed that Darcus worked as a servant in the home of Jesse Roberts, while being employed in the household she became pregnant by Jesse Roberts, their daughter Sarah Jane went by the last name of Roberts.

She is listed on the 1880 Overton Co., TN. Census by herself, living next door to her son Joseph Peter Cravens.
