ICHARD ANDERSON WINNINGHAM:
Richard Anderson Winningham served with Company B, 2nd Mounted infantry Union Army from July 2, 1861 to Oct. 6, 1864. His record states that he deserted on Sept. 10, 1861, but it also states that he was honorably discharged, he was captured sometime in April 1862 and confined at Madison, Georgia, he was returned on May 15, 1863 and served as a teamster after his return. His military record has a description of him as being five feet six with blue eyes and fair skin. On Sept. 13, 1887 he applied for pension for his service. The record states that on April 6, 1915 he was living at West Fork, Tennessee.

It is said that after the war Richard would romance the widows of Civil War Soldiers and once they became pregnant, he would tell them he would turn them in if they did not give him half of their pensions. Richard lived with Louisa Elthena Robbins Sells, widow of Thomas Logan Sells who was killed during the Civil War. It is believed that she is one of the widows that he tried to obtain pension monies from.

1880 Fentress Co., TN. Census: Richard Winaham age 44, Mary A. age 44, Elmira age 21, Dudley age 19, Bell age 14, Douglas age 12, Scott age 10, Dora age 8, Della age 6, Joel V. age 2, Sarah age 1 gdaughter.

Richard died of influenza on June 9, 1922 in Fentress County Tennessee.

Deposition of Louisa Sells by James Boles, Oct. 11, 1902: My age is about 55 years. P. O. Spurrier, Pickett, TN occupation merchant and farmer I have known Louisa Sells for a good many years, she is the recognized widow of a soldier and draws pension. She has had 4 children since her husband died and had 2 by her husband as it is said. Anderson Winningham is said to be the father of 1 or more children and Jim Lacy is reputed to be the father of John. As to her character, all I know is that she was years ago considered to have been intimate with these two men. I have heard nothing of her being intimate with these or other men since the examiner investigated her case at that time. So far as I can know there has been nothing wrong with these men since then. Men went to see her girl, not Winningham girl and she has had two children but I dont know of men going to see Louisa Sells of late years. There has been talk of Louisa Sells of course, but from what I have seen of her, I think the talk is based on her conduct some years back. I cant express an opinion as to whether she has led a virtuous life of late years, she is getting old, has had bad health in recent years and has joined the church. I dont know that she has been intimate with men of late years, and it is known by everyone that she used to be intimate with men. She never laid any child to me. Cannot state further. Am a not related or interested. James X Boles

Deposition of Louisa Sells by William H. Ledbetter, May 3, 1902 West Fork, TN.: I am 65 years of age. I live in the 10th district of this county. P O Nettle Carry, TN. Am engaged and have for 20 years, in the practice of medicine. I know Louisa Sells, widow of Logan Sells, who owned a farm on West Fork of obey River, there East Port, Pickett Co., TN. and is a citizen of the United States. Since the death of her husband, Louisa has had 2 children of whom one Anderson Winningham was the father as I know from having heard so by Louisa Sells. She also has other children to since Logan died; one of those children Andrew, is older than her children by Winningham and of that child one Reynolds was said to be the father but Louisa refused to tell me who that child's father was. Louisa's youngest child, John, had for his father James Lacy of Spurrier, TN. Now a preacher, that child is now 21 or 22 years old. I have no information of her having a child younger than John, she has always lived as a widow and her character for charity has been bad all along the line. I have no ill will for Louisa. I write of these things as result of a conversation about Tennessee Robbins who lost her pension upon a state of facts not so bad in quantity but the same in quality as this case of Louisa Sells. William H. Ledbetter (Descendants of Issac Robbins by Shawn Gray)
