ICHARD ANDERSON WINNINGHAM:
Richard Anderson Winningham served with Company B, 2nd Mounted infantry Union Army from July 2, 1861 to Oct. 6, 1864. His record states that he deserted on Sept. 10, 1861, but it also states that he was honorably discharged, he was captured sometime in April 1862 and confined at Madison, Georgia, he was returned on May 15, 1863 and served as a teamster after his return. His military record has a description of him as being five feet six with blue eyes and fair skin. On Sept. 13, 1887 he applied for pension for his service. The record states that on April 6, 1915 he was living at West Fork, Tennessee.

It is said that after the war Richard would romance the widows of Civil War Soldiers and once they became pregnant, he would tell them he would turn them in if they did not give him half of their pensions. Richard lived with Louisa Elthena Robbins Sells, widow of Thomas Logan Sells who was killed during the Civil War. It is believed that she is one of the widows that he tried to obtain pension monies from.

John E. and wife Sarah Jane Roberts Winningham both made affidavits for Martha York Winningham on her widows pension application verifying her marriage to Henry Anderson Winningham, and verifying that Solomon Winningham was their son. The affidavits were made on April 10, 1886 on this affidavit Sarah Jane states that she is fifty-five years of age, her occupation is housekeeping, her address is West Fork. John lists his age as fifty-five, occupation farmer, address is West Fork.

John E. Winningham served with Tinker Dave Beaty's Independent Scouts during the Civil War on Aug. 6, 1885 he made the following statement while applying for his pension: I am 55 years old, occupation farming, residence in the first district of Fentress County and postal address Boatland Tennessee. I am the claimant in this case and the identical John Winningham who enlisted and served in Capt. David
Beaty's Company of Fentress County, TN Scouts. I enlisted along in September 1862; I think I was discharged by "Act      of Congress". I dont know the date. I was discharged about the time peace was made. I was never in the Rebel Army and was never in any Military Organization other than above. I claim pension under the old law on my eyes, that they became diseased while in the above service and line of duty; this is all I claim on. Before the service during the five years just before I enlisted, I lived along the line between Fentress and Overton Counties Tennessee in the neighborhood of what is now known as Poteet PO. John Reagan (dead), Michael Cravens (dead), Jesse Hood very old man and very ill now, Isaac McDonald (dead), were near neighbors at that time. Seth Winningham is all the near neighbor I had there      and now living. I had no doctor at the time. When I joined Beatys Company, I could see as good as any man. In service I joined the command along in fodden pulling time in September 1862. I think here in this county, and remained on duty right along and with the command until peace was made. We did scouting duty all around here in this and Overton and Cumberland Counties Tennessee and in the edge of Kentucky. We had some little skirmishes, but was never in a regular battle. (Question from interview) Who was most intimate with you while in the service? (answer from John Winningham) Seth Winningham Poteet PO, Pete Cravens (dead), Jesse Threet (dead), Silas Wright Little Crab PO, John Turner Boatland PO, since service. When discharged I lived on what is called Big Piney some four miles from Boatland PO., Fentress County. Lived on place one year. I then moved some four or five miles NE of Boatland in Fentress County. Lived there about four years. I then moved in the edge of Overton where I lived three years on the mountain, then moved in about three mile of Poteet in Overton County, lived there two years. I then moved back to Fentress County on the Pooh Whitehead place, where I lived on Big Piney for nine years, I lived in different places near the line between Fentress and Overton Counties in one of the other county and in the locality of Poteet. I have been a farmer ever since the war. It appears that John was almost blind after the Civil War, his neighbor gave a statement to the investigator that he was practically blind after returning from the service, substantiating his claim.

Tinker Dave Beaty's Independent Scouts by Gary Denton Norris, pg. 64: John was born on Dec. 22, 1836, Private John Winningham served fron 1862 until 1865. Winningham was never absent from the company, he furnished his own $120.00 horse and equipment. John suffered from afflicted eyes due to being exposed to bad weather during his service time.
