Deposition of Louisa Sells by James Boles, Oct. 11, 1902: My age is about 55 years. P. O. Spurrier, Pickett, TN occupation merchant and farmer I have known Louisa Sells for a good many years, she is the recognized widow of a soldier and draws pension. She has had 4 children since her husband died and had 2 by her husband as it is said. Anderson Winningham is said to be the father of 1 or more children and Jim Lacy is reputed to be the father of John. As to her character, all I know is that she was years ago considered to have been intimate with these two men. I have heard nothing of her being intimate with these or other men since the examiner investigated her case at that time. So far as I can know there has been nothing wrong with these men since then. Men went to see her girl, not Winningham girl and she has had two children but I dont know of men going to see Louisa Sells of late years. There has been talk of Louisa Sells of course, but from what I have seen of her, I think the talk is based on her conduct some years back. I cant express an opinion as to whether she has led a virtuous life of late years, she is getting old, has had bad health in recent years and has joined the church. I dont know that she has been intimate with men of late years, and it is known by everyone that she used to be intimate with men. She never laid any child to me. Cannot state further. Am a not related or interested. James X Boles

Deposition of Louisa Sells by William H. Ledbetter, May 3, 1902 West Fork, TN.: I am 65 years of age. I live in the 10th district of this county. P O Nettle Carry, TN. Am engaged and have for 20 years, in the practice of medicine. I know Louisa Sells, widow of Logan Sells, who owned a farm on West Fork of obey River, there East Port, Pickett Co., TN. and is a citizen of the United States. Since the death of her husband, Louisa has had 2 children of whom one Anderson Winningham was the father as I know from having heard so by Louisa Sells. She also has other children to since Logan died; one of those children Andrew, is older than her children by Winningham and of that child one Reynolds was said to be the father but Louisa refused to tell me who that child's father was. Louisa's youngest child, John, had for his father James Lacy of Spurrier, TN. Now a preacher, that child is now 21 or 22 years old. I have no information of her having a child younger than John, she has always lived as a widow and her character for charity has been bad all along the line. I have no ill will for Louisa. I write of these things as result of a conversation about Tennessee Robbins who lost her pension upon a state of facts not so bad in quantity but the same in quality as this case of Louisa Sells. William H. Ledbetter (Descendants of Issac Robbins by Shawn Gray)

ICHARD ANDERSON WINNINGHAM:
Richard Anderson Winningham served with Company B, 2nd Mounted infantry Union Army from July 2, 1861 to Oct. 6, 1864. His record states that he deserted on Sept. 10, 1861, but it also states that he was honorably discharged, he was captured sometime in April 1862 and confined at Madison, Georgia, he was returned on May 15, 1863 and served as a teamster after his return. His military record has a description of him as being five feet six with blue eyes and fair skin. On Sept. 13, 1887 he applied for pension for his service. The record states that on April 6, 1915 he was living at West Fork, Tennessee.

It is said that after the war Richard would romance the widows of Civil War Soldiers and once they became pregnant, he would tell them he would turn them in if they did not give him half of their pensions. Richard lived with Louisa Elthena Robbins Sells, widow of Thomas Logan Sells who was killed during the Civil War. It is believed that she is one of the widows that he tried to obtain pension monies from.

1880 Fentress Co., TN. Census: Richard Winaham age 44, Mary A. age 44, Elmira age 21, Dudley age 19, Bell age 14, Douglas age 12, Scott age 10, Dora age 8, Della age 6, Joel V. age 2, Sarah age 1 gdaughter.

Richard died of influenza on June 9, 1922 in Fentress County Tennessee.

Notes for J
AMES L. LACY:
Oct. 11, 1902, Deposition of Louisa Sells by James L. Lacy: My age is 57 years P.O. Spurrier, TN occupation farmer and postmaster, J. P. and minister.
I have known Louisa Sells since I was a boy, she is perhaps about 8 years older than I am if. She was never married but once, that to Thomas Logan Sells who died in the service. He had two children by Louisa, James and Sarah, and Louisa drew pension ever since. The leaf has always been that Anderson Winningham seduced her after her husband's death. She has had three children, no for children, since her husband died, two Winningham and two boys by somebody else, one son John she laid to me. She was never considered a regular open prostitute, just was intimate with a few men along. It was the rumor about her that Winningham demanded a portion of Louisa's pension money with the alternative that he would report her, she refused to divide and its believed he was the one who reported her twelve or 20 years ago. Winningham had been intimate with Louisa til about the time the special examiner investigated this matter before, but since then I don't think they have been intimate. No Sir I had no carnal knowledge of Louisa since that time I had carnal knowledge of Louisa Sells was about 17 or 18 years ago it has been inside of 18 years though that I last had sexual intercourse with her, but exact date I cant tell. In I made a reformation of my life in 1885 or 1886 and joined the church then and have tried to live a Christian life ever since. I can say it was in 1884 or 1885 that I last had sexual intercourse with Louisa Sells. John is perhaps 22 or 23 years old and he was a chunk of a boy 4 or 5 or 6 years old the last I had to do with Louisa Sells, in this way. I do not know that anyone had carnal knowledge of Louisa Sells after I broke off. I know by report that Winningham was intimate with her and had children said to be his by her, but outside of myself I have no real information that was has been intimate with any man. I have not heard her name connected in this way with any man since special examiner made the investigation before. Her children moved to Texas, about White night, Texas I think, and she has spent a portion of the time there, has been back here last time less than a year, and I have heard no reports of bad conduct. Louisa joined the church 12 or 14 years ago perhaps and as far as I know, and as I honestly believe she has led a virtuous life since then. I personally know Louisa Sells led an immoral life until 1884 or 1885 but I dont think she has since special examiner was here in her case before. Cannot state further, am not related, interested or biased. I gave this testimony because called upon and put under oath. Have heard this red and same is true and correctly recorded. James L. Lacy Oct. 11, 1902. (Descendants of Isaac Robbins by Shawn Gray)
