Notes for L
UDWICK SELLS:
According the DAR Records, Ludwick Sells served in the Revolutionay War during 1777 in Captain Martin Bowman's Company. In 1780 her served in the Assembly, in 1798 he moved to Franklin County, Ohio, he first settled at the site of Columbus and later moved up river ten miles. He built a new home at the site of Dublin, Ohio. He and his sons built a tavern and a mill there.

"The History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio" contains the following statement: "Among the first settlers of Washington Township were Ludwick Sells and his sons Samuel, Peter, Benjamin and William from Huntington Co. PA. John Sells (another son of Ludwick) also came into the same neighborhood in the fall of 1808. Two of the brothers, Peter and Benjamin, came to Ohio first of all and purchased four hundred acres of land, where the town of Dublin now stands, for their brothers and father. They made a large camp, near the spring at Dublin Bridge, where they lived some weeks, until cabins could be built. Their settlement was made along the river bank, below the present site of the bridge, and high enough from the bed of the river to be safe from floods. The street on which they settled is now called River Street."

Dublin, Ohio Website Article: "Dublin is one of the oldest communities in Central Ohio. The first white settlers began to arrive in 1801, and included Ludwick Sells and his eight children. Many of these earliest settlers came from Pennsylvania via Kentucky. The land on which Old Dublin stands was originally part of the Virginia Military District, assigned to Virginia Veterans of the Revolutionary War. The Sells family acquired several parcels of this land and built a small settlement near a spring along the riverbank that still pours forth clear, cool water today just south of the bridge. In 1810 when the Ohio Legislature was seeking a permanent site for the State Capital, two of the Sells brothers, Peter and John, who had arrived in 1808, made a large tract of their land available. Though the official site selection commission recommended the Sell's Tract, the legislature chose a small piece of real estate at the confluence of the Sciota and Olentany rivers. Though less desirable land, this location was accompanied by a sum of money to build a capital and penitentiary. John Sells who owned the parcel of land where Old Dublin now stands had a portion of his land surveyed into lots and in, 1818 offered a new town for sale.
