Includes NotesNotes for Oscar Cunningham Deck:
In a 1988 interview with Bertha Barnes Cross (who was a sister to Stacy Barnes who married my great grandfather William Deck) Bertha observations indicated that while William's father, Simon Deck was a hyper, fidgety man that could not be still, most of the other Deck's were very laid back, soft spoken and Leasure loving people that enjoyed life and new how to get along well with almost everyone. Until several Decks married into the Adam/Barnes family the Decks had been Lutherans in faith helping to build the first Lutheran Chruch in this area - Zion Lutheran Church.
The Barnes were very moralistic Methodist, helping to found the first Methodist camp grounds in Sullivan County, and other than resting on Sunday for church they found it hard to take time for pleasure and Leasure activities and instead spent any time they were not involved in church working and seldom took time to relax with family and friends. She said the marriage of William Deck and Stacy Barnes produced a good harvest in the birth of Oscar Deck, a man who worked hard and loved the Lord, but still maintained his easy going soft spoken nature. And somewhere along they way the Barns religious faith won out over the Lutheran faith, and there were no Deck's in this area that remained Lutherans to her recollection. Neighbors of Oscar Deck remember him as a man that did not need to talk his faith he just lived it by example.
Oscar came to know Beulah Milhorn when he helped with his father's General store located where the Tri Cities Airport is currently located. When his father's grocery store ran out a product that a customer needed Oscar would row across the river to check and see if the William Giesler General store had the product. On many of these occasions he found a sad and unhappy young girl working as the store clerk. When alone she was often in tears. His tender heart and soft compassion touched her deeply and she shared with him that she had been the oldest of 13 children and when her father could not feed all of his children he had chosen her to give to the Giesler family as a servant or foster child. While the lady of the house, in this second marriage, was good to Beulah, as Beulah helped her care for the new baby and worked at other times in the store, the children from this first marriage, especially the boys pestered her and were making her life miserable, keeping her in tears all the time. Oscar decided to remedy the problem by taking Beulah as his wife. This time instead of taking the short cut and rowing across the river in a boat, he drove the long way around in his old Ford car to ask William Giesler if he could rent the store, for word had spread that the store had became more work than the wife with her new baby could tend. Two rooms were built below the store and this was the birth place of their first daughter, Louise. However, soon Oscar build his own store and two story house where the other three daughters were born.
