Notes for Eleanor Louise VanGorder: She was in Wingdale (Harlem Valley Mental Hospital) in August of 1947. Helen Batista-Knapick met her then. Helen used to have two letters from her, they appear to be lost. When Elnora?Eleanor Louise was hospitalized some of the children were not adults, they went into an orphanage. David was the youngest, they never knew where he went. He may have been adopted quickly, being so young. It was assumed that Elnora Louise died at Wingdale, what actually happened is unknown.
The four she thought were the oldest did grow up and Helen met them around 1947. Cathy was pregnant shortly after that. Robert was living in Endicott with his wife Mary Lou
I have a photo of Eleanor Louise standing next to one of her sons. My mom believes this is Robert, but he looks rather young and his hair seems light. In 2003 this made sense, Robert was younger, not older as first thought. Mom remembers the girls being blonde and the boys a darker brown. The back of the photo is stamped by the processing lab "Fox Focus, San Antonio, Texas June 1956" If this photo was taken in 1956 we can assume she was alive until then. The fact that it was processes in Texas is surprising. Would you really send photos that far in 1956 to get processed, or was she or someone in Texas by 1956?
