W S GILES DIES AFTER PARALYTIC STROKE SATURDAY
 
Funeral Held Home on Caddo Street Today
 
William Simmons GILES, 79, of this city died at 9:15 o’clock Saturday night, June 7, following a paralytic stoke.  The funeral was held at the residence at 1515 Caddo street at 1:30 this afternoon under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, with Rev. W.W. FREEMAN, Pastor of the Church of Christ officiating.
 
Mr. GILES was born in Houston County, Georgia, January 21, 1851, and moved from that place to Texas in his youth.  He has lived in Hunt County practically all his life and has resided in Commerce for the past twenty-five years, having moved here in 1905.
 
He married Agnes CHAFFIN December 19 1878 and they had four children, three of whom are still living, Virgil having died December 17, 1888.
 
He is survived by his wife, three children, Mrs. Leota CAMPBELL, of Chicago, Mrs. Ethel SAYLE of Commerce, Dr. Upton GILES of New Orleans, four grandchildren, Frank and Upton SAYLE of Chicago, Upton GILES Jr., and Ann GILES of New Orleans, one great grandchild, Betty Anne SAYLE of Chicago, one sister, Mrs. Jim BACKHAM of Greenville, and one brother Bob GILES of Campbell.
 
Interment was made in the Sodom Cemetery near Campbell.

Conduct Final Rites Here Wednesday For Mrs. W.S. GILES, 75
 
Pioneer Resident of Section Who Died Tuesday Interred Near Lone Oak Wednesday
 
Final rites were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the family residence on Caddo street for Mrs. Agnes GILES 75, prominient Commerce lady who passed away at her home Tuesday afternoon following a several days’ serious illness.  The remains were taken overland to Sullivan Cemetery, near Lone Oak, where interment was made only a short distance from the site where this pioneer Texas woman was born. 
 
The deceased was well and favorably known by many people in the Commerce section, who join with the Journal in offering sincere condolences to the bereaved survivors in the tragic passing of their loved one.  While her death was not altogether expected the children having been summoned to her bedside when physicians expressed the opinion that she could not survive an attack which struck her Friday, it came as a shock to many who mourn the passing of one of Texas’ oldest residents, known for her service to humanity.
 
She was born at Lone Oak May 17, 1860, the daughter of William and Virgie Milsap CHAFFIN, and has resided n this area since that time.  She was united in marriage with W.S. GILES December 19, 1878, at Lone Oak, and to this happy union three children were born.  Mrs. GILES’ husband preceded her in death five years ago.  She had been a member of the Christian Church for the past 45 years, and had worked diligently and faithfully in the Master’s service since embracing Him as her Savior.
 
The Rev. W.W. FREEMAN conducted the last sad rites here.  Pall bearers were E.K. FREEZE, T.R. YOUNG, L.E. FULLER, Earl SANDRIDGE, W.W. ROGERS, and Dave YOUNG.
 
Surviving Mrs. GILES are three children, Mrs. George SAYLE, Commerce, Dr. Upton GILES, New Orleans, La., and Mrs. Frank CAMPBELL, Freeport, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. A.F. RICHTER, Greenville; a brother, Ben CHAFFIN, Mena, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Upton SAYLE of Commerce and Dr. W. Frank SAYLE, Upton GILES, Jr. and Ann GILES of New Orleans, La., three great grandchildren, Betty Ann, Wilma June and Dorothy Jane SAYLE, all of New Orleans, La.

Tuesday Services for Mrs. Campbell
 
COMMERCE - Mrs. Leota CAMPBELL, 76, a resident of 1515 Caddo Street, died at 4a.m. Monday Morning June 30, following a two-day illness.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church.Vicar J. Dean MAURER will officiate and burial will be made in Rosemound. The body will remain at the W. Y. Goff Funeral Home until the hour for the service.
 
Born July 9, 1881, near Campbell, Tex., Mrs Campbell was the daughter of W.S. GILES and Agnes CHAFFIN GILES.  She was married to Frank R. CAMPBELL, August 7, 1898, in Greenville.  She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany, Episcopal.
 
Surviving are her husband, Frank R. CAMPBELL; one sister, Mrs. George SAYLE; one nephew, Dr. Upton GILES, Covington, La; a number of nieces, including Miss Ann BUTLER, New Orleans.

Commerce Doctor Fatally Injured In Automobile Mishap

 

Funeral services for Dr. W. Frank SAYLE, 39, were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sheely Funeral home with Reverend Joseph Connaly and Reverend Lee Mileri conducting.

 

Dr. Sayle died at 5:05 p.m. Thursday in Alexandria, La. from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near that place.

 

Dr. Sayle was a native of Commerce having been born December 17, 1904, and had lived here almost his entire life.  He attended the University of Texas and the College of Medicine of the University of Illinois, graduating with a medical degree in 1933.  He studied X-ray for one year.  For a time he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in Chicago, and he practiced medicine in New Orleans two years before moving to Commerce.  He was a member of the Hunt County and American Medical Societies and the Methodist Church.

 

He was married to the former Dorothy PATTERSON on January 7, 1927, and Mrs. Sayle and three small daughters, Betty Ann, Wilma June, and Dorothy Jane, are among the survivors.

 

Also surviving are his parents Mr. and Mrs. George SAYLE, pioneer residents of Commerce, two uncles Dr. Upton GILES of New Orleans and George CAMPBELL of this community.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the medical profession in Commerce, the druggists and the members of the Commerce School board of which he was a member.  Arthur WEST, Kenneth ENGLAND, Charles and Bert GATES, Bob SAYLE, Curtis SKELTON and Doug MITCHELL.

 

Active pallbearers for the interment at Rosemound cemetery were Harry CLARK, Leo ROAN, A. B. CRANFORD, Jim WHEELER, Dr. G. I. OVERSTREET, and D. DILLINGHAM.

 

A large crowd and a profusion of floral offerings at the funeral attested to Doctor Sayle's immense popularity in this section.

 

Dr. Sayle in his years as a citizen of Commerce had built a wide reputation for being a competent physician and surgeon and was a valued member of the community.  He had served the city in many capacities, the most recent being a member of the local board of education.

 

Since the war shortage of doctors in Commerce, Dr. Sayle had worked harder and harder as all civilian doctors and was contributing a great part to the war effort.

Dr. Upton George SAYLE

 

Private funeral services for Dr. Upton George SAYLE, 31, who died of gunshot wounds inflicted "by person or persons unknown," according to a coroner's inquest, will be held at his office on Bonham and Arp Streets here at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon.  Reverend Joseph M. Connally of the First Methodist Church will conduct the funeral and interment will be held in the Sullivan cemetery at Campbell.

 

Dr. Sayle, who had been a resident of Commerce his entire life and a member of the First Methodist Church since early childhood, had been engaged in the practice of optometry here for about a year.  He attended the public schools of Commerce and graduated from Commerce High School in 1927.  He attended East Texas State Teachers College for about two years, later working as a brakeman on the Illinois Railway lines for a number of years.

 

He then entered Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago where he completed an optometry course, setting up practice here with his brother, Dr. Frank SAYLE, in June, 1940.

 

Pallbearers for the funeral will be Dr. Frank SAYLE, Frank R. CAMPBELL, J. D. BYOUS, Emmett O'NEIL, A. B. CRANFORD, and U. E. OLIVER.

 

The deceased is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George SAYLE; a brother Dr. Frank SAYLE; Mr. and Mrs. Frank R. CAMPBELL, his uncle and aunt; and Dr. Upton GILES, New Orleans, R. SAYLE, Commerce, Homer SAYLE, Commerce; all uncles, and Mrs. Tom SAYLE, an aunt residing in Commerce.

ETHEL GILES SAYLE

 

Services Held for Mrs. Sayle

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel SAYLE, 82, 1515 Caddo St., were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 19, in the W Y. Goff Chapel, with Dr. D. C. Butler and the Rev. Walter Lazenby Officiating.

 

Interment was in Rosemound Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Sayle died at 3:43 a.m. Feb. 18 in a Commerce hospital, where she had been a patient for one week.

 

Born March 23, 1886, near Lone Oak, Mr. Sayle was the daughter of W. S. and Agnes Chaffin GILES and had lived in Commerce since 1898.  On Sept. 28, 1902, she married the late George E. SAYLE in Campbell. He preceded her in death Aug, 31, 1961.  Mrs. Sayle was a member of the Commerce Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Presbyterian Church.

 

Survivors include three granddaughters, Dr. Betty Ann SAYLE of Galveston;  Mrs. W. F. WELLS of Ft. Worth and Mrs. June BAKER of New Orleans, La.; one nephew, Dr. Upton GILES of Covington, La.; one niece, Mrs. Bruce BUTLER of New Orleans, La.; and one cousin, Miss Willie BARLOW of Greenville.

 

Pallbearers were Thomas YOUNG, A. B. CRANFORD, Joyce PEEK, L. G. DICKSON, Paul JOHNSON and Carson GAYLOR.
