- Civil Order, Stately Home of Rev. James WILLIAMS (34 KB)
Civil Order the stately ancestral home of the Williams/McCord families of Marshall County, Tennessee, was originally built by Rev. James and Sarah WILLIAMS. Their first home was a log structure, the second was brick which was later fronted by the handsome addition as pictured in the photo from the 1950's. Rev. Williams named his homesite "Civil Order" and built an almost self-sustaining community around it before his death in 1850. In 1975, the old house burned to the ground. The only remaining standing structure is the smoke house, recently restored and is now a state protected structure. It is in it's orginal position. A mobile home now occupies the spot where the house stood. A granite slab, that once served as the porch steps to the house, appears to be in its original location and now serves as the entry steps into the mobile home. Smoke house and family cemetery can be located off Hwy. 31a, in Chapel Hill.

This is the plan of Civil Order, Marshall County, Tennessee prior to 1850. Civil Order was the home of Rev. James WILLIAMS and wife Sarah. Civil Order if in existence today would be located in what is called Chapel Hill, Marshall County, Tennessee. The only standing structure is the smoke house, recently restored. The cemetery is in excellent condition, recently restored by the WILLLIAMS and McCORD families. Both of these can be located off Hwy. 31a heading north out of Chapel Hill.
