Notes for John David Freeman:
John David Freeman was born in Rea Valley as it was earlier called. His entire life was lived within a few miles of this area. He was the 13th child born to John S. Freeman and Nancy (Cypert) Freeman. Nancy died when John David was age eleven.

John David and Cynthia were married 5 Feb 1893 in Rea Valley, Crooked Creek Township, Marion County, Arkansas. They farmed on the farm which is just north of the Rea Valley Cemetery. It is the best farm location in the area. It is flat compared to most. John David's brother, Moses Canada, also farmed with him. He lived 200 yards west and across the road from the cemetery. Roy William Freeman the son of Walter Burley Freeman took me to the exact location in 1990. The only remaining land mark is an old stone cistern.

John and Cynthia moved from Rea Valley into Yellville, Arkansas in 1908 with their nine children. They lived in the Willingham house. John farmed on the Fee Farm which is on the outskirts of Yellville.

I visited with Walter Burley Freeman of Calico Rock, Arkansas in 1970. He said, "I moved in and lived with John David's family in 1911, when William was about age three. I obeyed John as my father and I was treated well. My own father (Moses Canada Freeman) had died and my mother remarried to John C. Bench and moved to the next county (Baxter) in 1903. My early years, until I was eight were lived on the same farm with John David and his family. Albert and I became close friends. John David was a hard worker and a God-Fearing Man".

Ethel, the youngest child was burned seriously from an open fire from which lard was being rendered. This did not cause her death. Cynthia Ruth and Ethel became ill with the highly infectious disease of Typhoid Fever. Cynthia died 2 Oct 1912 and Ethel died 13 Oct 1912. They were buried there on the Fee Farm in a small cemetery on top of a beautiful hill overlooking the farm. Wilsons and Fees are buried there. Two Civil War markers are there, marking the graves of Fee family members that served in the Confederate Army. A marker was placed on the graves of Cynthia and Ethel in 1989 by William Roy Freeman, the youngest son of Cynthia.

John David had a long illness. His right thigh would not heal from an injury. He would not see a doctor because of religious reasons. Walter Burley said " I could see the bone in his right thigh". John David died from blood poisoning 5 Jun 1916. He is buried in the Layton Cemetery in Yellville. A marker was placed on his grave in 1989 by his son William Roy Freeman.

Nine children were orphaned. Margaret Ann, the oldest, was age 20, John Albert age 19, Winning Rome age 18, Virgil Canada age 16, Lou Ruth age 12, Acy Neal age 11, Robert Lee & Mary Lela (twins) age 9, and William Roy age 7.

The family was determined to stay together. Margaret the leader, such a beautiful young lady, became ill with Influenza in 1919 at the age of 24. Pneumonia developed, which resulted in her death 17 Jan 1919. She was buried in the Layton Cemetery in Yellville. The older children were still determined to keep the family together, so they worked and pooled their income. The boys worked at odd jobs, one of which was making railroad ties from oak timber using a broad axe. Neal worked at a Soda Pop bottling plant. The young ladies tended house for well to do families in Yellville.

Mr. Lee Hudson was back in Yellville from Oklahoma visiting his family. He was a Superintendent for the Magnolia Petroleum Company (Mobil) in the Oil Fields of Healdton, Oklahoma. He had a flat tire in front of his family's store in town. Winning Rome repaired the flat tire. Mr. Lee Hudson's brother said, "Lee why don't you give that young man a job in Oklahoma with your company? He sure could use it". Lee did just that.

ROME, JOHN ALBERT and VIRGIL CANADA went to Wirt, Oklahoma and started working for the Magnolia Petroleum Company (Mobil), driving trucks, hauling pipe and lumber for the oil derricks in western Carter County. All of the derricks were made of wood at this time. They would get the lumber and pipe at the train depot in Healdton and haul it to the drilling locations at Wirt, Dillard, Graham and County Line. This was very hard work because all of the trucks were loaded by hand. The pipes and beams were long and heavy. They knew how to work and were in good condition. It was said that Rome would get on one end of a pipe and two men on the other and lift it on the truck.

These young men didn't forget their brothers and sisters back in Arkansas. By 1923 they had saved enough money to send for the rest, except for two, which were NEAL and LEE. They would have to wait for a while. Lee later said he was scared to death back in Yellville that they would forget him. They didn't. They all rented a company house on the Magnolia lease north of Dundee, Oklahoma.

NEAL started working for Magnolia in 1924. LOU married Dale Willingham, who had moved to Oklahoma from Yellville also. He started working for Magnolia also. In 1926, LEE and WILLIAM started to work for Magnolia. The other two sisters, FLORA and LELA married employees of the same company.

In 1926 the six Freeman brothers and the three brothers-in-law were employed by the Magnolia Petroleum Company (Mobil) in the Healdton Oil Field.

In 1929 the country was in a depression which resulted in cut backs in Magnolia's operation. Rome, John Albert and Virgil were reassigned to the Production Department because the heavy trucks were discontinued. Lee was transferred to Kilgore Texas as a machinist in a machine shop. Dale Willingham was transferred to Seminole, Oklahoma. Vern Ferguson was terminated and moved to Pampa Texas where he worked for the Skelly Oil Company. Neal was transferred to Fittstown, Oklahoma. Joe Stephens and William Roy remained in the Healdton Production Department.
