Marriage Notes for Fanny M. Calkins and James Dewell: "On this 5th day of February 1870 personally appeared before me the undersigned a justice of the peace in and for the County of Oswego in said state Joseph Silson a Minister in good standing, whom I certify to be respectable and Entitled to credit who being dult sworn says that on the 20th day of October 1868 at the house of Joseph Calkins in the town of Perlermo in Said County he Joined in Marriage James Dewell of Tuscola County Michigan and Fanny M. Rude of VOlney Oswego County New York in [unreadable] with the laws of the Said State of New York in regard to Marriages"
Apparently, James Dewell pulled a fast one on Fanny, for James Dewell's first wife, Rose Jock, was alive, well, and not divorced when he and Fanny were "married" in 1868. Rose Jock Dewell died in 1893. In an affidavit signed when she was 65, she stated that she married James Dewell shortly after her first husband's death, but shortly after that discovered that James Dewell was already married. She left Dewell and "assumed her rightful name of Rude, as she was advised she had a right to do". She was using the name Rude when she married Harry Houghtaling.
