This contradicts the reported enlistment age of 42 in 1864, making his birthdate either 1816 or 1822, depending on which record you believe. My own opinion is that the 1816 birthdate is closer to the truth, for two reasons. One, his brother Justus was born in 1808, and 1816 is a bit closer to this date, making the gap in their ages a little more likely. Two, this was part of an official document to the United States Government for the pension record, and the minister would have no motivation to misreport Archibald Cole's true age. Three, Archibald Cole did have motivation to misreport his age. I find it somewhat more plausible that the minister is correct on the age and that Archibald Cole shaved a few years off his age for his enlistment, which was a common practice during the Civil War. It might also explain why he did not enlist earlier as a younger man might have done. I believe that Archibald Cole's age of enlistment in 1864 was probably 48, which would have been deemed too old for a recruit.

This contradicts the reported enlistment age of 42 in 1864, making his birthdate either 1816 or 1822, depending on which record you believe. My own opinion is that the 1816 birthdate is closer to the truth, for two reasons. One, his brother Justus was born in 1808, and 1816 is a bit closer to this date, making the gap in their ages a little more likely. Two, this was part of an official document to the United States Government for the pension record, and the minister would have no motivation to misreport Archibald Cole's true age. Three, Archibald Cole did have motivation to misreport his age. I find it somewhat more plausible that the minister is correct on the age and that Archibald Cole shaved a few years off his age for his enlistment, which was a common practice during the Civil War. It might also explain why he did not enlist earlier as a younger man might have done. I believe that Archibald Cole's age of enlistment in 1864 was probably 48, which would have been deemed too old for a recruit.
