In the Barons war 1264-67 he defeated theBarons at Evesham (1265). As King he is noted for encouraging Parliamentary institutions at the expense of feudalism and for subduing Wales on which he imposed the English system of administration. He later tried to assert his authority over Scotland and died while on his way to fight Robert Bruce.

anyone who is descended from Edward I (1239-1307) "Longshanks" and his second wife, Marguerite "le Hardi" de France (1279-1317) certainly a cast of tens, and perhaps hundreds, of millions...

I Edward I isn't the ancester of every last Englishman (and quite a few American) who have any English blood at all, it's a damn close thing.

Edward was the first English king since 1066 whose daughters married into the English nobility rather than to foreign rulers, and his younger sons Thomas, earl of Norfolk, and Edmund, earl of Kent, were among the first royal cadets of the Plantagenet house to leave descendants in England (the first having been Edward I's younger brother Edmund, earl of Lancaster).

Edward I's daughters Joan and Elizabeth merried, respectively, the earls of Gloucester and Essex; Joan also had a second marriage, to a squire from her first husband's household, and had 4 more children in addition to the 4 she had borne the earl. Three of her four children by the earl, and 2 of the four she had by her second husband, left issue.

Elizabeth had ten children, though several died young. ultimately, only one of her sons and two of her daughters left issue. But both daughters were immensely prolific - one of them had 18 children, and the other nearly that many.

Through all these lines, as well as that of his successor Edward II, Edward I's descendants turn up in unusual places and circumstances. Fletcher Christian, for example, who led the mutineers against William Bligh on HMS Bounty, had a well-atttested descent from Edward I through Joan countess of Glooucester. Fletcher's only son was borne by one of the native women who lived with the mutineers on Pitcairn Island; but today, through intermarriage, all of the inhabitants of that island are descended from Fletcher Christian, and so from Edward I. Sir Antony Wagner, the late Garter King ofArms, thought that Pitcairn thus probably represent the highest per capita concentration of the blood royal of any British possession.
