James Gardner was born in Fishell township, Duchess Co. New York 26 Apr 1758 and died 21 Apr, 1849 in Hillsville, Varroll Co VA. He enlisted for service in the Revolutionary War in 1777 Sussex Co New Jersey at the age of about 19. He served several short enlistments and was wounded twice, once byu a rifle ball during an engagement on Staten island, New York and again 3 yrs later when he was shot through the leg at the siege of Yorktown. The old veteran is buried in the Gardner Cemetery on his original farm near Hillsville VA. The DAR has marked his grave.
After the war, He had moved to Shenandoah Co. VA: Then to Franklin Co. VA, and finally to Montgomery which later became Grayson and eventually Carroll. While in Franklin Co he married 29 May 1797 to Tabiltha Martin. Tabitha Born 16 Dec 1780 was 22 yrs younger than her husband. She died 7 Sept 1862. They came to Grayson Co in 1819.
Old James wrote his will in 1845 and named all of his children. There were sis sons, Matthew, james, Andrew Washington, Alexander, William and John: five doughters were maned Mary, Jane, Nancy, Elizabeth and Sarah. James left land to all his sons except John. John recieved only $5.oo. Descendants speculated that he had previously received some land from his father(1)(note)
John Gardner was the second oldest child and son of James and Tabitha. He was born 22 Dec 1800. In abouit 1834, John moved his family to Missouri. At that time he had five children and eight more were born in MO. John had married Rachel Horton before leaving Grayson Co. Rachel was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Webb) Horton, Josephbeing a Quaker from Stokes Co NC but was dismissed from his church for marrying a non-Quaker. Joseph was one of the witness to the will of old James Gardner.
Ruffes Gardner, Sr of Carroll Co VA wrote a history of the Gardner family in 1968 in which he outlined the descendants of old James however, when he came to Johnb and Rachel, he wrote that they had gone to MO and that he knew nothing of their children or later decendants.
The present writer decends from James Gardner son of the veteran and bro of John. Several years abo while researching other families in Butler Co. MO, I noted a Rachel Gardner, widow age 75 living among younger Gardners. Could this be the same Rachel Gardner?
I went back to the 1860 Madison Co AR census and lo and behold, ther was listed John and Rachel Gardner, ages 60 and 55 born in VA. The ages in 1850 were 50 and 45 respectively, both born in VA. On that census, children listed were four born in VA. Luch 25, Tabitha 21. Jackson Lewis 17 and Eli 16. Nearby was a married James Gardner age 25 undoubtedly the oldest son. The first child born in MO was William 14, followed by Elizabeth 12 twins Mary Jane and Martha Ann 10, Catherine 8, Malinda 4 and Joseph M. 2. By the ages of these children with their birth places, one can see that the move to MO weas inthe period between 1834 -1836between the birts of Eli and william.
We now go to the 1880 census for Madison Co. John was no longer presant. Rachel was living in Hilburn TWO with yet another son, Washington, age 27, hence born after the 1850 census when Rachel was about 48 yrs old. His wife Elvina E. In the same twp was the fanily of Joseph 32 and his wife Nancy.
In the Union twp was James 54 and wife Elizabeth. Next door was son John age 33. A few farms distant was Joel, no doubt another grandson of Rachel. Then came "Louis" age 48 the Jackson Lewis of the 1850 and an apparent second wife, Sarah. Next to him was William age 44 the first son born in Mo and on the same farm was his apparent son of this William his wife was Louisa. Living with the above Louis J Gardner was his brother Eli Henry age 46 who apperantly never married.
Also in Union TWP was Lucy Gardner, living in the household of Plesant Hankins. Lucy was age 50 so matched the daughter of John and Rachel, their oldest daughter in fact. Lucy was listed as afflicted with consumption. It was not until I studied the 1900 census and found that the wife of Plesant Hankins was named Malinda who was the right age to have been another daughter of Rachel age 4 in 1850. Living with them in White River TWP in 1900 was old Eli Gardner now age 77.
Near the Hankins in 1880 was a William L Gardner age 28 and his wife Sarah, he was apparently a brother of Joel.
When we futher analyze the 1900 census we find Washington Gardner now in Lamar TWP. In White River TWP is John K Gardner ag3e 34 and wife Florence. This John was probably a son of Louis J. who I copied as John Wage 15 in 1880. Also in White River TWP was William N. age 66 next door was Pleasant Hankins.
These were all the Gardners that I copied on these census although tere may be more. Many of the older ones were dead by 1900 undoubtedly and some of the others had probably moved on to OK, TX and elsewhere. As I did not know all the daughters married names I have not searched for them. Some may have married in MO and remained there.
All the Gardners had not moved to madison Co together. John and Rachel were there by 1860 as he had a child born in AR in that year. He too may have come with his parents. James had a child born in 1864 in MO so it is likely they moved to AR soon after the war.
Joseph was in AR before 1871 while John came between 1871 and 1873. William did not arrive until shortly before the 1880 census after 1878. So it appears that , one by one the sons and at least some of the daughters followed or accompanied their parents to Madison Co.
