Melvina was the daughter of Thomas Anderson McBride and Dovie Lundie Conley, and was born in Illinois (her parents had migrated from Rogersville, Rutherford, Tennessee). She was married in Seguin, Guadalupe, Texas to Elias 'Eli' Mayer and had twelve children.
