Notes for Unknown French: From The French Family Record, compiled by Ruth French Duffy and Philip A. Duffy, 1982-3:
In Washington Co., Tenn., which borders Greene County, there is a deed transferring ownership of a 200-acre parcel of land from several Frenchs to one David Fulks. This is signed by George French, Henry French, Peter French, Barbary Felker, Evy Margret Toppin, Mary Walker, and Everett Walker. This deed is recorded in Nov. 1809. Where all of these Frenchs came from is at present unknown. It is presumed that this is in settlement of an estate and that these are all the children of Henry French's father. If the order of names means anything, Henry French must have been the second son. This matter is still being researched.
(This is the slender reed on which we base the knowledge of this family, if it was a family. We are guessing that Everett Walker was the spouse of a Mary whose maiden name was French, but have nothing to prove this. Going by that, we are also guessing that the women named are also married sisters within the family, with Evy having married a Toppin, Barbary a Felker (probably Fellers) and Mary having married Everett Walker. There is nothing to verify all that, however [mlf]
Maidie Strellman writes about the three sons:
I have come to the conclusion that Henry, Peter, and George were land speculators as were many in the area at that time. They bought a lot of property and seemed to have the money to do so.
George and his brother Henry bought 200 acres of land on Cherokee Creek in Washington Co., TN for $1,000 on 9 December 1812.
[mlf] Perhaps they were buying back the land mentioned above.
