Notes for R
OBERTA ANN BRANNON:
I was born at home. In the house that Mama and Papa lived in.
It was on Brantley Street in Opp. It was an old house and in
1940 did not have an inside bathroom. I remember very well
going to the "outhouse". I remember one night after dark Mama
started out the back door to the outhouse and saw a black man
squatting down beside the wood pile. She started calling Papa
and the black man ran away. In those times the blacks had
their own section of town and for a black man to be in a white
section after dark was not taken very well. They never did
find out who he was or what he wanted. In the 40's children
did not go trick or treating at all, the only people that were
out trick or treating were the older teenagers and if they came
to your door and they thought you did not give them enough they
would come back later and throw paper sacks of sand on your
front porch. I can remember on Halloween night Papa would sit
out on the front porch in the cold until around midnight.
Sometime in my earlier years Mother and Daddy briefly lived in
Eufaula, Alabama. I do not remember when, but it must have
been prior to Daddy's going in the Navy. After the war was
over and he was discharged from the Navy we moved to Montgomery
and lived there for a year or so. We moved back to Opp in the
spring when I was in the second grade. This would have been
1948. Then in 1952 it was back to Montgomery. After Jimmy and
I married in July 1958, they moved to Vero Beach, Florida.
Daddy came back to Montgomer in 1963 and lived with us for a
while. Mother came back to Montgomery the first of August
1964. In 1965 Mother and Daddy divorced. He was involved in
an accident at work during the construction of the Eastern
Bypass in Montgomery. His back was broken in three places and
he never fully recoverd from this. He gradually became an
alcoholic and died in his sleep in 1971. Mother had remarried
and it was not a happy marriage for her. She died very
suddenly in 1980 at 60 years old.
