Notes for John Geary: Johnny Geary started his football career with Ledley Memorial School in Lord Street. Later played for Castleview. While standing at the corner of Woodlee Street one evening, he was approached by Walter Scott and Billy Lewis, two Glentoran officials, and asked to sign. Although a Glentoran fan through and through, Johnny coolly declined until they could guarantee him first team football. This was agreed to due to a striker shortage at the Oval at that time. At one time he played on a line with Joe Bambrick and Fred Roberts and all three were among the most prolific goal scorers in the history of the Irish League. Johnny earned two international caps for Northern Ireland. Both in 1931 and both against Scotland. 21 February 1931 at home and 19 September 1931 away. Unfortunately his career was cut short at the age of 25 when he suffered a serious knee injury in a Gold Cup clash in 1931 at the Oval against Derry City. He was forced to retire shortly afterwards.
He stayed with the Glens for many years in various capacities and even managed the team for a short period in 1955.
Among the footbal related people who visited his house at 9 Hollycroft Avenue, Bloomfield, Belfast, were Billy Bingham and Jackie & Danny Blanchflower.
