 Includes NotesNotes for Francis Pugh:
!Most of the information about the Pugh family is from research
conducted by Phillip Farrington Thomas of Cartersville, VA, son of Frank
Pugh Thomas, and great-grandson of Mary Elizabeth Pugh. Much Pugh data
included here is taken from a chart prepared by Phillip 15 June 1994. The
prime source of the information on Phillip's chart is an extensive
genealogical chart entitled "The House of Pugh, Virginia-North Carolina-
Virginia, 1666-1960." This chart was certified August 24, 1959, by
Charles R. Holloman, Sr., Genealogist to the North Carolina Society of
the Cincinnati, at Raleigh, NC. "The above certification was made in
attestation of the elligibility of Herbert Lamont Pugh (10th generation
of Pughs in America) son of Samuel Eli Pugh, for membership in the
Society of the Cincinnati." Phillip received this chart from George Pugh
of Baton Rouge,LA.
"In 1666 three brothers, Francis, Daniel and Thomas Pugh, came to
Jamestown, Virginia from Caernarvon, Wales, reportedly bringing their
families with them. Francis and Daniel settled in Nansemond County,
Virginia, moving onto a plantation called 'Jerico.' (Pugh family tradition
claims Francis Pugh built a brick house on this land. The same tradition
says descendents of Daniel Pugh moved to South Carolina, and those of
Thomas Pugh moved to western Virginia and the Ohio region.)"--from
Phillip Thomas's chart.
Phillip obtained the Pugh family genealogical records of Dr. Edward W.
Pugh of Bertie County, NC, prepared in 1884. Dr. Pugh's information has
few dates. Note: some information about the three Pugh brothers
indicates they arrived in Virginia in 1665.
Note:
!The following is a quote from the genealogical chart entitled "The House
of Pugh" --
"The name, Pugh, of extremely ancient Welsh origin, was
originally ap Hugh, meaning "son of Hugh." It appears among the oldest
Welsh and English and early American records in the various spellings
ofHugh, Apugh, Apew, Pew, Pue, Pough, Peough, Peugh, Pughe, and Pugh.
The last form listed is that most generally used in America today.
"In the year 1666, three brothers, Francis, Thomas, and Daniel
Pygh, left Carnarvonshire, Wales, and came to what is now Nansemond
County, Virginia. (In March of 1645, the name of Upper Norfolk County
was changed to County of Nansemum and in 1705, to Nansemond.) Some
time later, Daniel Pugh and his family moved to South Carolina and
Thomas and his family to West Virginia and the Ohio region. Francis
remained in Virginia, and on his estate in Nansemond County, twenty
miles from Norfolk near Suffolk, Virginia, he built "Jericho Manor."
"During the approximately three centuries between 1666 and
1960, i.e. from Francis Pugh I to the present, fourteen generations have
evolved and are designated on the chart by Roman numerals. [If we
follow our own line of Pugh descent down to the youngest generation in
the year 2000, we find but thirteen generations -- Kate Pugh Fanning
Thomas being of the ninth generation.]
"The genealogical outlay that constitutes this family tree is
designed principally to set forth the ancestry (seven generations) and
the progeny (seven generations) of Nicholas Ware Pugh who was born in
Nelson County, Virginia, on 1 August 1815, and who, on 14 November
1842, married Winifred I. Wood. The family lineage antecedent to the
birth of Nicholas Ware Pugh is, in considerable measure, fragmentary.
Many details are missing and doubtless are impossible of determination.
However, in the opinion of a number of well recognized experts in the
field of genealogical research, the structure and continuity as revealed
in this sketch are fundamentally correct and are amenable to
documentary corroboration. Subsequent to the generation of Nicholas
Ware Pugh, the record, save for a few minor elements, is complete and
unquestionably correct." [Note that our branch of the Pugh line separates
in the fifth generation, three generations prior to Nicholas Ware Pugh. In
the fifth generation are three brothers, sons of Thomas Pugh I -- Francis
Pugh V is the progenitor of the line leading to Kate Pugh Fanning Thomas;
Colonel Thomas Pugh, Jr. is the progenitor of the line leading to our Bond
cousins in Brownsville, TN; and William Scott Pugh is the ancestor of
Nicholas Ware Pugh.]

Children of Francis Pugh and Ann Howe are:
  1. +Francis Pugh, b. 1692, Cherrystone, Northampton, VA., d. 05 Aug 1736, Bertie, NC..
