Cornelius Ward "Neal" Friend moved to Ohio when it was still warm with the vestiges of Indian occupation. In 1845 news to 'Neal's' family at Sang Run brought them shock and concern. 'Neal" was imprisoned for debt. On December 1st, 1830, he had patented 80 acres of land (legal description, E 1/2 of the NW 1/4 pf Section 26, Township 13, Range 4), in Carroll County which according to a grandson, was near a frontier town called Pottstown. The bride, whom 'Neal' had married in 1826, was Sarah A. Kemp. She came from a family who owned a woolen mill on Tub Run at Rich Hill, near Turkeyfoot. The story, as related by Scott McClelland Friend in 1950 to Capt. Hoye and Blanche Guard was: 'Neal' prospered in Ohio but signed a surety bond for a sheriff. The sheriff abscounded with the county funds, and, since the co-signer had filed a bill of bankruptcy, Cornelius was held accountable. At that time the State of Ohio had a law that called for imprisonment of defaulting debtors. Cornelius asked his brother Elijah to help. Elijah enlisted the help of the Masonic Brothers in securing 'Neal's' release and Elijah rode horseback from Sang Run to the home of the Governor of Ohio. Elijah told the Governor the story. The Governor released Cornelius and he was restored to his family. The family was brought home to Maryland. Cornelius' wife, Sarah Kemp, referred to the four children the brought home, Ira Ellis, John H., Elizabeth and William H. H. as he "Buckeyes". Four children had died in Ohio, Mariah, William, Sarah Jane and James. Three, Martha Jane, Marshall and Zachariah Taylor were born in Maryland. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 162.
