Front Elevation of Store located at 20 South State Street. This store was founded by Issac "Johnny" Bezark shortly after the turn of the last century and became a great success until the stock market crash in 1929. The store was closed shortly thereafter. - Yankif Labe Asher from Mglin, Russia (150 KB)
Yankif Labe Asher was born in Mglin, Russia on January 15, 1866. He came to America on the "S.S. Cassel" from Breman Germany on January 23, 1910 landing in Baltimore, MD. He married Sara Mona Liben. Yankif known by his family as "Jacob" owned a flour mill in Russia, and later became a baker in Lorian, Ohio and worked for Samer Lerner until 1920 and then moved to Cleveland and operated a "sweet shoppe". Yankif Labe Asher died in Cleveland, Ohio on July 10, 1927. Susan Lynn Lerner's Great Grandfather on her mothers side is Yankif Labe Asher pictured above.

Together they had the following children: Hanya Asher born on January 22, 1888; Bertha Asher born on July 20, 1890; Jennie Asher born on March 27, 1891; Chaim Nachmann Asher born on December 10, 1893; Sam Asher born on February 07, 1895; Esther Asher born on September 22, 1897; Stella Asher born on January 16, 1899; Art Asher born on February 28, 1902 and Blanche Asher born on June 15, 1904. Sara Mona Liben died on November 10, 1937 in Lorain, Ohio. Susan Lynne Lerner's Great Grandmother on her mothers side is Sara Mona Liben pictured above.

Feige Hessie Zurofsky was born in Russia in 1840. Her father was Bawrech Zurofsky and her mother was Zlata Leviton. Feige Hessie Zurofsky married Hyman Osherow (later changed to Asher) who died in Russia bet. 1873-1874 and together they had the following children: Yankif Labe Asher born January 15, 1866 in Mglin, Russia; Henya Raisa Asher born abt. 1870 in Mglin, Russia and Zlata Asher born abt. 1874 in Mglin, Russia. After Hymann Osherow died Feige met and married Zavain Wolf Hainey who was born in Mglin, Russia in 1836. Together they had the following children: Zisheh Hainy born on December 13, 1877 in Mglin, Russia; Sophia Hainy born on August 27, 1880 born in Mglin, Russia; Masha Hainy born on May 19, 1883 in Mglin, Russia; Sadie Hainy born on May 10, 1888 in Mglin Russia; and Harold Hainy (later changed to Hain) born on December 23, 1888 in Mglin, Russia. Feige Hessie Zurofsky came to America after the turn of the last century and died in Lorain, Ohio on March 22, 1917. She was buried at Salem Cemetary, in Lorain, Ohio. Chane Steiger was born in 1849 in Galacia (later Poland). He father was Rabbi Yudeh Aryeh Steiger. Chane married Mr. Vogel and they had one son and two girls. One of the girls name was Eva Vogel who was born abt. 1880 and died in New York in 1934 married Simon Lerner. Later in her life she traveled to Lemberg Austria to be with her sister. Chane died on September 25, 1925 in Vienna, Austria where she was buried. Her headstone in the cemetary was distroyed by the Nazi's during WW II. Above - Hyman Asher (Chaim Kachmann Osherow), a farm laborer age 16, arrived in the U.S. January of 1910; he went to live with Sophia and Sam Lerner in Lorain, Ohio. He is pictured above with Rebecca Hainy (Mendel Lieb's daughter) making deliveries for the grocery. He maried Rebecca about 1913. Mendel Lieb first came to the U.S. in 1903 with his half sister, Sophia, and they joined the Ozersky's (cousins) in Youngstown, Ohio. Mendel worked as a baker but after three years (1907) he became disillusioned and returned to his family in Russia. In December of 1908 he again returned with his family and settled in Lorain, Ohio where Sophia and Sam were prospering in the bakery business. He opened the "Youngstown Grocery" at 1622 E. 29th Street near Vine Street in the Hungarian neighborhood.
Hyman Asher later joined Sam Lerner in the "Lerner and Asher Hardware and Cutlery Co." at 2843 Pearl Avenue.

Joesph Bezark was born in about 1818 and married Rose Leider who was born in about 1820 in Lemberg, Galacia. Together they had at least three boys: Louis Bezark; David William Bezark born in 1842 who married Etta Raizi Stein and Abraham Bezark born in 1859 and who married Rose Adler born in March of 1864. The three boys with their families Emigrated from Lemberg, Galacia in 1893 landing at Ellis Island in New York. David William Bezark and Etta Raizi Stein together had six children: Marsha Bezark; Rose Bezark born in 1863; Isaac "Johnny" Bezark born May 25, 1868; Minnie Bezark born July 07, 1871; Samual Bezark born December 09, 1881 and Anna Bezark born in 1884. Pictured here is Isaac "Johnny" Bezark. He married Ester Sara Landfield from Rokitno, Russia on November 10, 1895. Together they had three children: Margarete Bezark born April 13, 1889; Byron Bezark born May 29, 1898; Leonard Joesph Bezark born July 24, 1900 and Leslie Bezark born July 11, 1906. Isaac Bezark died on May 09, 1931 and is buried in Waldheim Cemetary, Star of the West in Chicago, Illinois. John Robert Friedberg's Great-Grandfather on his mother's father's side is Isaac "Johnny" Bezark for whom he is named.

Israel Aaron Landfield and David Landfield were born in about 1820 and were brothers.
David Landfield married and had three boys, Luzar, ? and Solomon. Solomon Landfield born in 1863 married Esther Privolsky born in 1864 and together they had the following children: Isador Solomon Landfield born September 15, 1888; Herman Landfield born in 1890 and Michael Landfield born in 1891. Isador Solomon Landfield married Mary Brusslan born on March 30, 1888 and together they had two boys Sidney born June 14, 1912 and Seymour born February 08, 1918. Seymour married Ruth D'Vera Goldberg who is a decendant of the Paletz and Papermaster clans.
Israel Aaron Landfield married and together they had the following children: Lazarus Landfield, Abraham Landfield, Yetta Landfield and Marcus Landfield who was born in July of 1850. Marcus Landfield married Hannah Torchinsky and together they had the following children in Rokitno, Russia: Israel Aaron Landfield born March 17, 1867; Nathan Landfield born in 1869; Abraham Landfield born in about 1871; Mae Landfield born in about 1872; Ester Sara Landfield born December 25, 1874 and Joesph Landfield born on October 29, 1875. Nathan Landfield married Minnie Bezark and Ester Sarah Landfield married Isaac "Johhny" Bezark. Ester Sarah Landfield died on October 03, 1940 and is burried at Waldheim Cemetary in Chicago, Illinois. Marcus Landfield and Hannah Torchinsky are also buried at Waldheim IOBA in Chicago, Illinois.
