Page 67 of the register of Moriah Lutheran Church, Ludlow, PA, shows Johan P. Johnson Nystrand was born 3 January 1864 in Grafia Parish (now listed as Grava), married 22 December 1894, arrived in America from Varmland in 1887, received as a member of Moriah on 22 May 1887 and arrived in Ludlow from Sweden in 1890 (given the two "arrival" dates, assuming it is not an error, he appears to have returned to Sweden after 1887 and returned to Ludlow in 1890.
Family tradition says "Nystrand" was a name that was assumed upon arriving in America. This seems to be confirmed by Swedish records, which do not show him using that name. According to his daughter, Laurina, he had a brother, who also took the name Nystrand and later returned to Sweden and is buried there (per a conversation between Laurina and Paul Frost in Jamestown, NY in June 1981).
When he lived in Ludow he lived on High Street and on Church Street and was a leather splitter for Curtis Leather Co.
