"Nov. 2, 1752. Ship Phoenix, John Spurrier, Commander, fromRotterdam,
last from Portsmouth. 29th on the list.

BIOGRAPHY: Leonhart Wassum arrived in America with his three brothers, Johanes Wassum, John Conrad Wassum, and John George Wassum, in the year 1752 on the ship Phoenix along with John Spurrier, commander, from Rotterdam, Holland. They were immigrants from the Rhine Riversection of Germany landing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The four brothers took the Oath of Allegiance to the British Crown on 2 November 1752 (Pennsylvania Archives, Volume 17, Second Series, Pg. 370).

BIOGRAPHY: Another immigrant from Germany bearing the Wassum name, Johan Michael Wassum, came on the ship Neptune with John Mason, master, also from Rotterdam, Germany. On 24 September 1754 he took the Oath Of Allegiance at Philadelphia. The research of Irene Wassum-Owens, author of The Wassum Family of Smyth County, Virginia, has not been able to relate Johan Michael Wassum to Leonhart.

BIOGRAPHY: Leonhart (Leonard) Wassum took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America on
19 June 1778 and was given number 357. Northampton County, Heidleberg Township, Pennsylvania tax lists show Leonhart Wassum from 1783 to 1790 when he died. Heidleberg Township is now Jackson Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. The settlement of his estate was 9 June 1791 (Heidleberg Township File No. 1342).

BIOGRAPHY: His wife, Catharina (surname unknown), and their three sons Nicholas Wassum, Conrad Wassum, and John Jacob Wassum, survived him.

Name: On the public records there are a number of various spellings of the WASSUM name. Sometimes, several different spellings will appear on the same page! Since early American record keepers were English, the spelled and recorded the names as the sounded, or phonetically, such as WASSUM, WASEM, WASOM, WISEM, WATSON, and others.

Name: John Conrad Wassum signed his own name to the ship's register when coming to America, therefore, it is believed that WASSUM is the correct spelling of our ancestors.

Military: Leonhart Wassum served during the Revolutionary War. He was in Captain Deal's company of the Northampton County Militia, 8th Class (older men), Frontier Company, July 1781.

Military: Leonard "marched" 8th class, 7th Company, 6th Battalion,Northampton County Militia under Captain Smathers, 16 July 1781.
