Dear Fellow FUGARDs: There are only about 80-100 living FUGARDs on the planet today, most of whom reside in Ontario, Canada. There are a few in Australia, South Africa, the U.S., Scotland and England. I have to believe we share a common ancestor and am working hard to find out who that is. In the U.S. I have traced the FUGARD line to a Samuel FUGARD who was married and lived in New Hampshire in the 1750s and was a Revolutionary War soldier. His home in Bedford, New Hampshire, is still occupied, although not by any member of the FUGARD family. Regretably I am unable (so far) to name his parents or to make any link from Samuel back to Ireland which I suspect is is where his immediate ancestors originated. The information here on my Canadian relatives was obtained largely through personal contacts, since it is very difficult to get copies of Canadian records even if one is a resident there. So if I have incorrectly recorded personal information or relationships I apologize, and will correct those if you'll contact me. There is good reason to believe that the FUGARD name has a French Huguenot origin, perhaps having been spelled Feugard(e) once upon a time.It is a matter of record that Canada is one of the places the French Huguenots traveled when they left France a few hundred years ago and that may be how the FUGARDs came to be in Ontario, Canada. If you'd like to correspond please send an e-mail (or letter) to the address below and I'll contact you. This is a work-in-progress and may have "kinks" in it.I will be pleased to update this if you have information different from what is depicted here. Thanks for your time and interest. Bill
