I am attempting to build a complete FULKERSON family tree starting with the first ancestor in the New World, Dirck VOLCKERTSZEN. Dirck was a Norwegian ships carpenter who settled in New Amsterdam in 1623-1626 via The Netherlands. He married Christina VIGNE in about 1631 and they had nine children. The Dutch naming systems used Patronymics, which means that a child was given his father's given name as his surname. The children of Dirck VOLCKERTSZEN had the surname DIRCKS or a variation. Volkert DIRCKSE' children were VOLKERSE or a variation. By the time the English had taken over the colony, the Patronymics were dropped and English naming adopted. Phillip and Dirck VOLCKERSE became VOLCKERTSON. Since "v" and "f" are very similar in sound, the name was anglisized to FULKERSON. Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have collected. |
