William was born in Peoria, IL. He moved with his parents to Walnut, IL while he was still young. It is unknown where he met his wife, Gertrude, as there seems to be no record of the family in Bureau County.

Sometime around the birth of their son Harry, they moved to Clay Center, Nebraska. By the 1900 census, they were living in Walnut again and William was working as a plumber. They do not appear there in 1910 as they probably moved to Portland, Oregon by that time. Judging from a postcard written by William's sister, Agnes McElvania, he died around World War I.

William Miller (Mueller) was born Jul. 11, 1861 in Speyer, Germany. He grew up Catholic and served as an altar boy at Speyer Cathedral. This information was discovered by Catholics living in Kent while William lived there. According the Ralph Miller, William probably came to America to dodge the draft. He came in 1870 or 1871. The Franco Prussian War would have been happening at the time. He came to Holland first, then came to America. He came to the Nebraska Territory where he met with relatives. He worked shoeing oxen at a fort. Later he moved to Wisconsin. William stood only 5'5", but was very strong. Some of his strength may have come from his work as a blacksmith.

William met Angenette Barth either in Wisconsin or Chicago. In Chicago, William worked on refrigerator cars and meat packing. Somehow he got a position with the Erie Railroad and later moved his family to Dunmore, Pennsylvania, later he would become head of car shops in Kent, Ohio. In Kent, he was known as "China" Miller because he would not let his children go to school without clean white shirts. The name "China" because it was rumored that their laundry was done in a Chinese laundry.
