A Family Tree Grows in Tuscarawas County, OhioUpdated October 10, 2000 | |
| After leaving Germany and Switzerland, my paternal and maternal ancestors settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The first of my family to arrive at America's shores was the Funks. We aren't sure when they left Germany but they had made themselves right at home in Pennylvania where Jacob Funk (born in PA in 1782), wife Maria "Polly" Druckenmiller, and their 9 children decided to head west to Ohio in 1821. Jacob Hochstetler, who immigrated to PA of the Americas in 1738 at the invitation of William Penn, stayed in PA but his grandson Peter and his family moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio about 1818. The next of my family to arrive was William Huff and his wife, Margaret Barbary, and his brother, John Philip, all from Germany, in 1835. Then there were Peter Adam Seibert and his widowed mother from Germany who arrived in Ohio about 1842; Christian Loeffler and his parents, also from Germany in 1856; and the Retzler brothers and their wives, again from Germany, who got there about 10 years later. There was Hans Krieg and his family who sailed from the Canton Bern, Switzerland and arrived in 1851 (well, with the exception of father Hans who died on the way here!). I also have Maurers and Mosers from Switzerland and Menges from Germany. And my only non-German speaking link, Cadwalader Evans from Wales! I will be adding more, including photos and trees, in the upcoming weeks. |
