The Furey and Bretz Family Histories

Updated January 10, 2011

The Ancestors of the Furey and Bretz families are traced back to their native countries. Their names, dates and places of birth and death are given as found, as well as other records and stories found in various sources.

The Furey and Kenney families are traced back to their roots in Ireland. Of special interest is Captain James Kenney, a Police Chief in Brooklyn at the turn of the 20th Century who was famous for fighting corruption.

The Bretz history goes back to 1540 in Germany, when the family surname was spelled Britzius. They later changed it to Bretzius by the time they immigrated to America. By the mid 1800's the name was shortened to Bretz. There is much information presented about Captain Michael Bretzius, who was a prominent citizen and officer in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War. The Emerich family is also traced back to the 1500's in Germany, and information about the Klein family is also presented.

Many of the entries in this research are not verified, and the possibility of errors exists. My research is on going. Anyone with additional information or corrections can contact me. I would also be happy to furnish additional information and photographs to any family members who request them.
