Descendants of John Conibear (AKA Reid)Updated July 14, 2005 | Denise C Galvin [email protected] |
I am researching decendants of JOHN CONIBEAR (has also been spelt - Coneybear, Conibeer, Conniber, Coneybeer, Conibere). On 18th November 1979, John married ELIZABETH REED.Elizabeth dies in Combe Martin, Devon, England and was buried in Combe Martin on 25th February 1834. John (B 1804), the son of John Conibear and Elizabeth Reed, was sent to Tasmania, Australia as a convict arriving on 4th July 1845, he also was born in Combe Martin, Devon, England. When John finished his time, he took the surname of his mother which was Elizabeth Reed, at some time the name Reed was mis-spelt and then became Reid.John died in 1857 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Also children of John (B.1773)and Elizabeth Reed, were:- Ann, B.1797 D.1803;Ann, B.1807 D.1808;RICHARD, B.1809;GEORGE, B.1812 D.1891; WILLIAM, B.1816;JAMES, B.1820 and PHILIP, B.1832. ROBERT CONIBEAR (B.1829, son of John (B.1804) & Elizabeth, sailed as free settlers, from London on 28th March 1878, arriving in Australia on 23rd May 1878. Sailing with Robert were ELIZABETH, (shipping records show her as being aged 47),MARY ANN 11 years, RICHARD 9 years and ROBERT GEORGE aged 7 years. It is believed that when Robert arrived in Tasmania he and his family also changed their surname to REED or REID, as his father had done, however this has not yet been proved. Any information you may be able to add would be appreciated. |
