Our ancestors came from Germany, The Netherlands, Poland and Sweden, and more recent ones in New England and the Middle West.
Germany: Swabia in Bavaria and both Vorpommern and Hinterpommern.
The Netherlands: Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, Zeeland and Zuid-Holland, with a branch crossing the border from Belgium.
Poland: Poznan and Tarnow. Data current to 2004.
Sweden: Örebro, Skåne, Skaraborg, and Värmland. [In viewing the
Swedish pages you will find some 'weird' place names
due to the fact that FTM program will not accept the
special Swedish alphabet characters ä, å, ö.]
Benedickt Braun and Agathe Höld, both from Bavaria, emigrated to Chicago separately and married there in 1871.
The Galitz family came from Vorpommern in 1869 and Jennrich's from Hinterpommern in 1882. They both settled on the near West Side of Chicago and became one family when Fred Galitz married Bertha Jennrich in 1901.
Most of our ancestors left the homeland for what they felt would be a better life, but both Dutch branches left for religious reasons. Jan Killewinger was a prominent member of the group known as Seceders in The Netherlands. These men and women thought the church was getting too worldly and wanted a more conservative religious environment. The Killewinger family was in 1847 among the first settlers of South Holland, Illinois, just south of Chicago. Willem Goossen most likely left Holland for similar religious reasons when he came to Chicago in 1848.
The Majewski family left Poznan, Poland about 1880 and settled in Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania. Nicholas Brod was from southeastern Poland where he had been apprenticed as a woodcarver, but left in 1893 to come to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He found work carving statues for a Catholic church in Glen Lyon and also a wife, Stanislawa Majewska. The couple married in 1896 and immediately moved to Chicago.
Magnus Nilsson (Anderson) from Skåne in southern Sweden and Ida Johansson from Värmland, Sweden both emigrated in the 1890's to Chicago where they married in 1898.
