1. JAMES(HOWARD?)¹ KENEY was born Abt. December 20, 1822 in Jefferson Co., Ohio, and died January 14, 1862 in Camp Tupper, a Union Army Training Camp. He married CATHRINE ANN "KITTY" ROWLAND March 14, 1844 in Roxbury, Washington Co., Ohio, daughter of ELISHA ROWLAND and PHEBE ADRIAN.

Notes for JAMES(HOWARD?) KENEY:
James changed the spelling from Kenney to Keney, but he had also signed his marriage license as Kinney and all of his military records show yet another spelling.

James and Kitty were both Protestants.

James and Kitty Ann owned a farm in Wesley twp., Washington Co., Ohio.

James Keney died at Camp Tupper, a Union Army Training Camp, caused by measles when the camp was hit by an epidemic.

A story has it that the difference in spelling the Keney name (Keney/Kinney/Kenney/Kinne) comes from the fact that James Keney signed only four legal documents in his life. 1). Marriage License 2). a deed to the property he purchased and the other two are unknown at this time. Each time James signed with a different spelling - 1). Kinney 2). Kenney 3). Keney 4). Kinne.

When James died, Kitty raised all of her children on her own. After they were all grown up, she moved to Washington Co., Ohio, taking her young son, Elisha, with her to live on a small farm at Middleridge in Wesley twp., Ohio.
