A man whose boyhood was spent in West Union is supervisor of construction in a great "auxiliary defense measure," the largest project of its kind in the world. This is a 1,600 mile underhround cable to be laid between Omaha, Neb., and San Francisco, Calif., which will cost $20,000,000 and ultimately will triple transcontinental phone facilities. Mr. Gardner is a brother of Mrs. Chris Messerli and Miss Grayce Gardner, West Union. Mr. Gardner, Whose home for some years has been at Elkhart, Ind., has changed his residence to Denver, Colo.

RAYMOND C. GARDNER
Raymond C. Gardner, 150 Lashley Lane, died Wednesday after a brief illness in Community Hospital. He was 82.
Mr. Gardner was born April 9, 1891, in West Union, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army during World War 1. For over 43 years he was employed by American Telephone & Telegraph, retiring in 1956. He moved to Boulder from Cincinnati, Ohio, 17 years ago.
Mr. Gardner was a member of Boulder Elks Lodge No. 566 and St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Gardner, Denver.
