Descendants of John and Priscilla Thurber (21 Feb. 2008)

Generation No. 2

      2. Captain John2 Thurber (John1) was born Abt. 1649 in England, and died 24 November 1717 in Swansea, Bristol Co., MA. He married Mary Tucker1 1 September 1671 in St Dunstan, Stepney, London, England. She was born Abt. 1644 in England, and died 25 March 1718 in Swansea, Bristol Co., MA.

Notes for Captain John Thurber:
John Thurber is also referred to as John Thurber, Jr. Without knowing the name of the father of the elder John, it is better not to use the suffix "Jr." He was a sea Captain. In 1685, Capt. John Thurber, master of a brigantine, was sailing from Madagascar to America when his ship was blown off course by a storm. He sailed his damaged ship into the harbor of the settlement of colonial Carolina now known as Charleston, SC. Capt. John Thurber expressed his thanks for the kindness of settlers there by giving them about a bushel of seed rice from Madagascar. Rice had been introduced as a crop in the area previously without success. However, when the rice supplied by John Thurber was planted in the rich black soil of swamplands in the area, the crop grew well. Within a few years, rice was one of the most important crops in South Carolina, which led the states in rice production for the next 200 years.

A John Thurburrow is listed as a Surveyor of Highways in 1674 and in Swansea in 1675. In 1677 John Thurburrow is listed as a constable in Swansea. This could be Captain John Thurber.

He probably settled in Swansea MA after his marriage since his children's births were recorded there.

John is buried in Kickemuit Cemetery, Warren, Bristol Co., RI. At the time of John's death, the area that is now Warren was actually parts of Swansea, Rehoboth, and Barrington, Bristol Co., MA.
