  Notes for ASENATH PELTON:
Like her mother, she was a person of well-balanced mind and a remarkable memory. Always a friend in need, worked in her church until her last illness.

  iv.   EZRA PELTON, JR, b. November 1801; d. October 18, 1805.
  v.   CHAMPION PELTON, b. March 14, 1803; d. September 13, 1846, Prairie Du Chien, Crawford County, WI.
  Notes for CHAMPION PELTON:
He was pre-eminently the "Elder Beloved" and confided in by every member of the family. He built up a large mercantile business that extended to adjoining counties, and largely among the French and Indians. Champion, his brothers Edward and Alonzo, built the first grain elevator and flourmill on the river at that place. It was still active in 1892. Champion was remarkable for his social qualities, probably the first temperance reformer of considerable influence in this frontier town, notorious for gambling and every sure of inebriety. All the brothers united in the effort to lessen the saloon curse in that border town. In the year 1846, Champion and Ezra's wife were buried the same day. Ezra, Jr. died a few days later, not a relative was able to attend the funerals, six members lying near death's door at the same time, no medical attendance was to be had. Their illness was not defined.

229. vi.   LUCY PRATT PELTON, b. September 26, 1804; d. April 12, 1869.

  Notes for ALMIRA MERIETTA PELTON:
Almira was educated at Wesleyan Academy, went south with a corps of teachers. After graduation, Almira was called as Preceptress of Amenia Seminary at Amenia, NY, then to Baton Rouge, LA, then to Clinton, Miss., then back north because of malaria. Soon after the death of Mr. Dwight, Almira was forced to return to Prairie du Chien to her brothers. When her health improved, she resumed school duties, and in 1849-1850, undertook reform and reconstruction of the school system, introducing new textbooks, discipline and the first blackboard ever seen in the city, and in 1892, was in the advance guard as to school matters. After Samuel's death, Almira went into the book business in Minneapolis, Minn. She worked with the Women's Christians Temperance Union and in 1892 was the only living representative of thirteen children.

  Notes for SAMUEL G BASSETT:
In 1851, Almira Pelton Dwight, married Samuel G. Bassett, a pioneer in the area. He also tamed the savage land, setting out with a strong will and a mammoth breaking plow, drawn by 7 yokes of oxen, he turned over the prairie sod and was ready to sell to the new settlers horses, cattle and farm products of his own raising.

  x.   ELIZA PELTON, b. October 28, 1811; d. February 27, 1838.
  Notes for ELIZA PELTON:
Eliza was remarkable for a most re-tentative memory, graduating from Wesleyan in 1836. In 1837, she went south with a corps of teachers and took charge of the department of music in the Seminary at Baton Rouge, LA. At the end of 4 months teaching she was taken ill, and not withstanding all that warm southern hearts could do for her, she died in Christian faith and hope. An immense funeral showed how she was loved and respected.

  xi.   JONATHON PELTON, b. October 16, 1813; d. 1840.
  Notes for JONATHON PELTON:
Jonathon was a studious man of good intellect, was called the "book worm", learned the carpenters trade, joined his brothers in Prairie du Chien and died there in 1840.

230. xii.   ALONZO PELTON, b. March 26, 1816; d. September 21, 1891.
  xiii.   LEANDER GRANDISON PELTON, b. October 31, 1821; d. November 29, 1861; m. MARTHA HURD, August 21, 1848; d. April 08, 1851.
  Notes for LEANDER GRANDISON PELTON:
Leander received and academic education and followed his older brothers to Prairie du Chien, WI. Taken with gold fever, he left his bride and went to California to seek his fortune. While he was absent, his wife died on 8 Apr. 1851: after his return to Prairie du Chien, WI
