Notes for M
ARY JEANETTE PELTON:
Mary worked off and on as a waitress after they moved to Danbury, WI. Along with running the farm, working as a waitress, and going through the deaths of three sons and a daughter, she held up very well.
The first son, Ernest, was born premature and did not survive the first day, living only about 5 hours. The second son, William, died at four months of age. The third son, Al Jr, died two days after his 40th birthday from a major heart attack. The daughter, Ella Rae, was only 6 years 11 months old, and died from a brain tumor.
Mary worked very hard at running the farm, raising a family and going through hardships. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, hunting , fishing, bowling, and gardening.
She knew that she had medical problems that she did not want her sons and daughters to know about. In the early part of 1990 she was admitted to a Minneapolis, MN hospital for heart problems. She confided in her close friends, Dick and Grace Jero, about her heart problems but not her own family. Prior to the operation to replace a valve in her heart, her sons and daughters showed up at the hospital to give their support and well wishes. She could not believe that all of her family, along with their spouses, were there for her. The operation was very successful and she made a very good recovery. Mary survived this operation just a short few months. She passed away while entering the Danbury post office building.

Notes for A
LFRED AUGUST CARL GARBE, SR:
Alfred had to quit school after his father passed away, to help run the farm that they lived on in the Town of Beloit, Rock County, WI.
He married Mary Jeanette Pelton while he was employed at the Beloit Iron Works (later became known as the Beloit Corporation) and lived in Beloit, WI.
Alfred was found to have a dark spot on his lungs and signs of emphysema in the late 1940s. During this time, his mother passed away. Mary suggested that they move to northern Wisconsin to be with her parents in their waning years. In June 1950 they moved to Danbury, WI where they lived with Earle and Jesse Pelton until they purchased land west of Mary's parents and built a home of their own. This house was built with the help of relatives and friends from the area. The house was built from rough sawn logs. Alfred included a barn on the property and set up farming. This proved to be difficult to raise his rather large family on just the income of the farm so he he took a job in bridge construction in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area. A friend and neighbor of Al's was a foreman for the a bridge construction company and helped Al get a job with them. This job kept him away from home from early Monday morning until late afternoon on Friday. Mary and her older sons ran the farm and when Al returned home for the weekend, he would do the majority of the heavy farm chores.
He had several close calls to death while working on the bridge construction job, once falling several feet from the under side of one the bridges while holding onto a sheet of plywood, which broke his fall, receiving only minor injuries.
Al took early retirement at the age of 62 so that he could enjoy several years of rest and relaxation before his death. Al enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family. He had a minor heart attack while doing a roofing job for a neighbor. Later he was found to have inoperative cancer in his lungs. He went to Superior, WI for chemotherapy treatments. On the day of his death, he was laying down reading a Louie Amour book, his favorite author, and had a major heart attack. Two of his sons were there at the time and attempted CPR but it was too late to save his life.
During Al's life, he lost three of his sons and one of his daughters whom all died at various ages.
