The ancient and distinguished family name of Garner had its origins in the Baptismal name "the son of Garnier" which was a French version of William. In northern England the name was also a corruption of "the gardner". The name was first recorded in 1170 as Garnerius de Nugent. Later recordings include Johannes Garner 1379.
