Militia.Guarded boats under Conwayduring Battle of Camden 1780 Nathaniel II was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, but there is no record of him applying for a pension. From the Revolutionary Pension Papers of Pittsylvania County, Virginia: John Harris of Pittsylvania County applied for a pension, and part of his service is proven by the following affidavit from Nathaniel Gardner: "I, Thomas Williams, a Justice of the Peace for the County of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia, do hereby certify that Nathaniel Gardner, a credible man of said County, personally appeared before me and made oath that in the year 1780 he was a soldier in the Army of the Revolution attached to Captain Isaac Clement's Company of the Militia from said County of Pittsylvania, and that John Harris, who is an applicant for a pension, was also a soldier in the same Company under Captain Clement, that we marched to Hillsboro, in the State of North Carolina, from thence to Coxs Mill on Deep River, and from thence to Masiler Ferry on Pedee River. At that place the said John Harris was left with Major Conoway and others as a guard, and the rest of us went on to Rugbys Mill and I was in the battle when General Gates was defeated (Battle of Camden) the Militia retreated and I never met the said John Harris until we were discharged. Given under my hand and seal this 16th day of December, 1832. Thomas Williams."
