Johanna Matilda (or Matilda Johanna) Anderson was usually referred to as Matilda. She was born in Sweden on 12 April 1849. Her father's name was Peter- sometimes listed as A.P. Anderson. Her mother's name is not known. They apparently both lived their entore lived in Sweden. Matilda came to the United States at age 19 years in 1868. She may have been married at the time to John G Carlson who came about the same time. Matilda had two sisters and one brother who also came to the United States but I am not sure of the exact dates. John and Matilda Carlson had their first child, Matilda Sophie, on April 8, 1869 and their second daughter, Emma Olivia in 1871- both in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.By 1873 the family had moved to Denison, Crawford County, Iowa and he had built a home at 209 Wall Street. This house was still lived in by his daughter, Sophie, in 1920, was sold at some time and was still standing and well maintained in the 1980's. Their next three children, born in 1874, 1876 and 1878 died in childhood(two little girls only a day apart in 1880). Carl Joseph Albin was born in 1882 (he married and had twelve children) and Jennie Elizabeth was born in 1883 (exactly one month after the death of her father). John Carlson worked as a clerk in a store and a laborer according to census and birth records. He died in 1883 at the age of either 37 or 40. Matilda was about 34 years old at the time and had three young children. I am not sure how she made a living but she remained in the house on 203 Wall Street and did not remarry until 1898. Sophia married in 1890 and moved to a farm in nearby Soldier Township. Emma and Sophie had always been especially close. the following year in 1891 Emma Olivia died at the age of 20. On July 30, 1898 Matilda Carlson, at age 50 married Charles Lundfren , age 60. They continued to live in Denison in close contact with her family. She died August 13, 1931 at the age of 83 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Denison with her first husband John, and her four children. From 1861-1868 T.Nystorp Sateri Askeryd, Smaland, F, SE
