Notes for William Gravenor:
From "The History of Woodstock Connecticut-- Geneologies of Woodstock Families" by Clarence Winthrop Bowen, Ph.D., LL.D. p. 261 -- Volume 6 - Privately Printed by THE PLIMPTON PRESS, Nowood, Mass., USA 1935 {see p. 261 for more references:}

" The Grosvenor family flourished in Normandy A.D.912. Sir Gilbert Grosvenor came to England A.D. 1066 with William the Conqueror. Sir Thomas Grosvenor, Baronet, b. 1655, received from Charles II a passport which is now at Eaton Hall, near Chester, England. The above Sir Thomas was son of Roger Grosvenor and grandson of Sir Richard Grosvenor, who was put in Fleet prison for three years and fined 2550 (pounds?) for defending the Crown against Parliament during the Civil War."

William Gravenor (Grosvenor)
Of Bridgnorth, County Shropshire, England, Genleman, buried St. Leonard's, Bridgenorth, Jan. 17, 1600 (1599?), m. Nov. 16, 1590, Ursula Blunt. It cannot be proved that William was descended from John Grosvenor the "Great Hunter", who came to England from Normandy with William the Conqueror in 1066. His immediate ancestors are not buried in St. John the Baptist Church, Chester, England, as was supposed, but in St. Leonard's Church, Bridgnorth. William's son William was a Churchwarden of St. Leonard's Church in1635 and a Royalist in the Civil War. William's grandson Leicester, as the oldest son, recorded in 1663 the pedigree of his family in the College of Arms, London, but failed to show his relationship to the Grosvenors of Chester England, of whom the Duke of Westminister is today the representative. It cannot be proved that an ancestor of William Gravenor, father of John Grosvenor of Roxbury, was also the ancestor of Sir Richard Grosvenor, knighted by James I, a baronet and Mayor of Chester, to whose family belong the Dukes of Westminster and Sir Richard Grosvenor, fourth Baronet and Cupbearer at the coronation of George II -- (see appendix, p. 849 :" Grosvenor Family -- John Grosvenor (Gravenor) 1641-1691 of Roxbury is 'believed to have been the immigrant to New England," descended from the Gravenors of Shropshire, parish of Claverley. From Adam de Gravenor (1), time of Edward I, the line to John Grosvenor (Gravenor) of Roxbury is as follows: William de Gravenor (2), Richard de Gravenor (3) living 1376, Richard (4) of High Gravenor, Thomas Gravenor (5), Henry Gravenor (6) of Heathton died 1435 married Edith, John Gravenor(7) of High Gravenor died about 1496 married Agnes, John Gravenor(8) of Whittemore near Bobbinton died 1496, William Gravenor(9) of Whittemore living 1507, Rowland Gravenor(10) died Bridgnorth 1522, William Gravenor(11) buried St. Leonard's, Bridgnorth Oct. 1589, married Margaret, Richard Gravenor(12) of Bridgnorth married Martha, William Gravenor(13) gentleman, buried St. Leonards Jan. 17, 1600, father of John(14) of Roxbury. The coat of arms on the gravestone of John of Roxbury does not prove that the Gravenors of Bridgnorth were related to the Grosvenors of Chester to which family belonged Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, third Marqu'is, created Duke of Westminister in1874] {see "John Grosvenor of Roxbury, Mass., His Family and Ascestry," by Winthrop Haight Hopkins, 517 Oakland Boulevard, Chicago (Rutland, Vt. 1934] pp.11-13}
