James Gardner (b. 1815, d. 30 Nov 1899)

At the time of Emma's birth 18 Feb. 1849
The family were living at18 Albert Terrace, Bales Pond , Islington.
that is near Luton some 30 miles north of London.
The Gardner family owned a world famous rope and straw hat, etc. factory
The factory fell on hard times; because it was completely hand operated
competing against the many machines that were being introduced.
The sons were therefore forced into other livings.
In 1856 , James and Amelia with their five children were sent out by the Societies
as mission-teachers. First at St. John's and then the East End School at Harbour Grace.
He taught the boys and she the girls. He also acted as Lay Reader, the secretary of most parish affairs
of St. Paul's Church, being frequently mentioned for his services throughout the church records.
