Notes for FISHER GASKINS:
***************************************************************************************
Fisher Gaskins was born in North Carolina in the year of 1780. Fisher and his brother David left home at a early age and moved to Beauford District, South Carolina. It appears that Fisher soon moves to Warren County, Georgia, for he was married there in January 17, 1800 to his first wife Miss Rhoda Rowe ( a daughter of Richard Rowe).Rhoda also had a brother by the name of Richard that moved to the present day Berrien County, Georgia, and died there, leaving a large family.
After living in Warren County, Georgia for five or six years, Fisher and his familyand Rhoda's parents moved back to Beauford District, South Carolina where they are found in the 1810 census. That same year (1810) Mrs. Gaskins died and Mr. Fisher Gaskins returned to Warren County, Georgia with his five children, and was married there on January 17, 1811 to Miss Mary Lacy. She was the daughter of Archibald Lacy R.S. and sister of John B. Lacy who became a prominent Methodist minister in ante-bellum days.
Following his second marrage, Fisher and his family moved to Telfair County, Georgia, where he appeared as a petit juror for the first time October term 1812, Telfair Superior Court.
It was about this time ( 1810 - 1815 ) that Fisher Gaskins entered rather extensively, the cattle raising business, becoming the owner of great herds of cattle. This was the primary cause of his moving to Telfair County where better natural pasturage was afforded.During the first five years of his residence in Telfair County, Mr. Gaskins spent much of his time trying to find the best range for his cattle and had herds of them up in Walton County, Georgia and other counties in that section. It does not appear that he ever lived there.
About 1821, Mr. Gaskins moved his cattle across the Ocmulgee River into the new county of Appling ( now Coffee ) and soon after moved himself and his family there also.Sometime between 1825 and 1830, Mr. Gaskins moved further southward with his family and cattle, this time to the new county of Lowndes, which had just been laid out and formed out of Irwin. They settled in the portion that is now Berrien County and lived there until 1832 when, having heard of still better grazing lands in Florida.Mr. Gaskins and the children of his second marriage moved near Newnansville, Columbia County, Florida. There he homesteaded lands and established his home.He died there in 1848 and was burried in the Old Newnansville Cemetery.Mrs. Mary Gaskins survived him several years and was also burried there.
When Mr. Fisher Gaskins moved to Florida, he left much of his herd in Georgia to be looked after by his sons John, William and Harmon, who by this time were grown. These herds multipliedand, in turn, other herds were formed and placed about various points in what is now Clinch, Echols and Lowndes Counties and over into Florida under management of herdsmen, who for their services were paid at the end of the year.
The beef cattle were driven to Savannah and other distant places each year and sold. This arrangement continued with the elder Gaskins making periodic visits of inspection until his death, after which the three sons in Georgia received the Georgia herds in a division of the estate.

The following information entered by Wayne Gaskins
Family Tree Maker's Family Archives from Broderbund >< Marriage Index: 1754 to 1850, Sec. 11, ch. 74, Warren Co., Ga. Marrages from 1784 to 1850
Fisher Gaskin is listed as marring a Rhody Ross Jan. 11, 1800
I believe this to be an error due to age of doc.and the reading and transcribingof same.I have not seen a copy of document but it is widely believed that Fisher Gaskins married Rhoda Rowe on Jan. 17, 1800.
