Find Family

This research centers around the 'Group of 7', the offspring of Samuel and Alishia Hewitt, born around 1875. Samuel migrated to Trinidad from Barbados, and his wife Alishia migrated to Trinidad from Montserrat. They settled in the San Fernando region of Trinidad. From here the diaspora begins. Three of their children, Alva, Irene, and George migrated to the United States in the 1910s. Irene came through Ellis Island--Alva and George more than likely came through the nearby ports in New York or New Jersey.

Later generations of Hewitts came to the States in the 1960s through 1990s. They eventually rejoined early pioneering Hewitts. There was a 2002 June Reunion, making for an exciting time of Hewitt discovery and reuniting. Another gathering occurred in December of 2002. Another is expected for 2003. Although most remain in Trinidad, the Hewitts also reside in the United States, London, Cuba, and Canada.

Current versions of the Family Tree and a Photo slide presentation of the June 2002 family gathering (currently a broken link)can be downloaded from the 'Reports and Trees and Related Files' sections at the bottom of this page.

Maureen DeSouza-Coakley along with Jacqueline Gomez co-hosted a gathering and served a feast for approx. 20 family and friends. Many Hewitts met & saw the tree for the first time. The cuisine, prepared by Chef Jacqueline, was of a Caribbean-French flair, and profiled her proud Trinidadian heritage and her French training. The setting was elegantly served at the home of Jacqueline in Brooklyn. To quote cousin Rudolf, it wasn't good, it was 'damned good'.
