Irene ran away and joined the circus. She is probably the first woman lion tamer and is probably the first person to put lions and tigers together in the same act. She was mauled during a performance and was hospitalized in Jacksonville, Florida. This probably convinced her to end her circus career.

According to her obituary, published in the Dade City Banner (Dade City, Florida):
Irene was born on 27 November 1862.

The Hugh Embry Library of Dade City, Florida provided a copy of Irene's obituary. The copy did not show the newspaper's banner or date.
