Notes for Edward Akin:

AKIN, AIKIN, ATKEN

Edward Akin, was born sometime in 1800 at New York of Scotch, Irish descent. He moved to Little Rock, Ark. about 1830, met and married Miss Mary R. Guest on Feb. 16, 1834. They moved to Mill Creek a tributary of Middle Fork of the Saline River, in Saline County and homesteaded before 1840.(They are listed in Marble Township in the 1840 census). They were the parents of 13 children.
Edward Akin was killed by Union soldiers on June 15, 1864 and is buried in the Talley Cemetery near Marble Church, Garland County Ark.
Legend has it , that, Grandpa Akin(Edward), was at home when some Union soldiers came by and took the groceries from them. Also at home were some of the women and Grandchildren. The soldiers had Edward who was 64 years old, go with them to the pasture and catch a horse~ After the horse was caught, one of the soldiers, a Sargent, shot and killed Edward Akin. Two of his Grandsons who were about 10 and 12 years old witnessed the event. They learned the Sargent name and where he was from. When they were 18 and 20 years old they road a mule to Northern Missouri, captured the man, brought him back to Mill Creek, took him down to the pasture and killed him. They then cut off the top of his head, boiled the flesh off it and used it for a soap dish.

Mary R. Guest was born Jan.29, 1818 in Madison County Alabama. Her family moved to Little
Rock, Ark. when she was 10 years old. When she was 16 she met and married Edward Akin.
I have not been able to establish the date of her death; but she was still living in 1908
and was 90 years of age at that time.
The names of their 13 children were, Erios, Samuel, Jane, Etta "Eva", <David, Joe, Edward, John, Mary, Lydia, Eliza,Syntha, and Agnes.

One of their sons, David Akin is my Great, Great, Grandfather. (J.D.J.)

David Akin was born in 1848.(The same year Marble Baptist Church was organized). He was born on Mill Creek, Saline County Ark.(This was before there was a Garland County). The Akin home was later on the Saline, Garland County line. He married Francis V."Babe"Oats ~Y about 1868 or 69. They had Twin daughters born March 15, 1870, Alice E. and Laura Bell. Babe Akin died Sept 14, 1870 just 6 months after the birth of the twins. David then married Miss Jo Ellen Guest and had one son, Tom Akin born Dec. 25, 1882. _________-~
David Akin was Baptized into Marble Missionary Baptist Church in Sept. 1893. He was active in Church work serving as messenger to various meetings on many occasions.
The membership roll of Marble Church gives the date of his death as 1911. He is buried in the Talley Cemetery, Garland County Ark.
Francis V. "Babe" Oats was Baptized into the membership of Marble Baptist Church in July 1866. She married David Akin in 1868 or 69, gave birth to twin daughters March 15, 1870 and died Sept 14 the same year. The membership roll of Marble Church lists Charley Oates and Rebecca Oates as some of the first members. Also William and Martha Oates as being Baptized the same year as "Babe". I am sure these were some of her family;but do not know the exact connection. (J.D.J.)
Francis V. "Babe" Oates (Oats) is buried in the Talley Cemetery, Garland County Ark.
One of the twin girls born to David and Babe Akin, Laura ~a Bell Akin is my great ~ Grandmother

Laura Bell Akin was born March 15, 1870 on Mill Creek, on the Garland, Saline County line,ARI
She married Washington Alonzo Gates in about 1889. They were the parents of 6 children.

MARBLE TOWNSHIP

The information given above is the direct result of an interview by the author, with grandma, in the presence of David and Alice at the~ residence-, and is given as she and family related it,

In conversation a few days ago, Edd, Jr, made the remark, that since his mother had related her experience as above, that he was thoroughly convinced that there was a hereafter, Grandma Akin was Borne in Madison Co,, Ala, Jan, 29, 1818 She has been a faithful member of the Presby-terian Church for 70 years Her father moved to Little Rock1 when she was 10 years old, She went to school there for some time where she studied and played with the late Judge John B Louis. She was married when but 16 years old, Grandma Akin is the mother of 13 children, six boys and seven girls She has over one hundred grandchildren, fifty great grandchildren and twenty-five great great grandchildren, In the lapse of 90 years Grandma Akin has experienced many ups and downs, and has carried many mental burdens, sufficient in many instances, to have destroyed both body and mind of the average individual, I believe her longevity due to her disposition to take the world easy, come what may, I have known the Akin family from my childhood up, and can say with perfect freedom, that they are kind and accommodating; free hearted and peaceable; until stirred up (and it takes an injustice to stir them) and then I would not vouch for what might follow,
