Descendants of John Gaulding

Generation No. 2

2. MATTHEW (JOHN II)3 GAULDING (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1)9 was born 1685 in New Kent County, VA10, and died 1772 in Prince Edward Co. VA. He married ELIZABETH GEERS Abt. 1690. She died 1773 in Prince Edward Co. VA10.

Notes for M
ATTHEW (JOHN II) GAULDING:

Chapter three of Dr. Charles Gaulden's book deals with Matthew (John) Gaulden. It is only supposed that John and Matthew are the same person, or that Matthew's full name was John Matthew Gaulden. Dr. Gaulden writes:
"John Gaulden II, was born prior to 1705 (my guess) in regards to John Matthew Gaulden in New Kent County, Va. He died in 1772 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. We have no definite proof that John II and Matthew are one and the same.
John Gaulden (Matthew) and Elizabeth Geers had a son named Alexander. This is perhaps further indication of a connection to the New Kent family. We know that their first son was named John Gaulden III. The usual practice in those days was to name the second son (Alexander) after the father's brother. Although this Alexander had a son also named Alexander, it is assumed that the older one was the first constable of Prince Edward County, VA. I have a copy of the inventory of John Gaulden's estate and it would indicate that they were of average means, although John II did own 800 acres in Prince Edward County, which was divided between his eight children. It should be noted that conveyance of John II (Matthew) 800 acres was not by outright gift but involved monetary considerations. Further, this land in Prince Edward County bordered on the north boundry of modern day Hampton Sydney College."
The eight children of John (Matthew) Gaulden II and Elizabeth Geers are listed below: (according to Dr. Gaulden)
      1. Elizabeth (Nancy)-first hundred acres to Nancy's husband, Francis Spaulding
      2. John (referred to as John III) recieved the second 100 acres. He sold this to his brother-in-law, Francis Spaulding, when he moved to South Carolina.
      3. Alexander (Sr., not the New Kent Alexander)- received the third 100 acres.
      4. Jacob- received the fifth 100 acres
      5. Jesse-received the sixth 100 acres, after John II's death
      6. Josiah- received the seventh 100 acres- after the death of his father
      7. Judith- recieved the eigth 100 acres to her husband, Henry Roberts.

Furthermore, Dr. Gaulden writes "There have been some who speculate that there was another daughter, Eliza Gaulden, who became the first wife of the French doctor, Francis Joseph Mettauer, and mother of the famous doctor, John Peter Mettauer. John Peter had five sons who became doctors."
(note: two Mettauer brothers are buried in the Hampton Sydney College Cemetary)

(Also, from information from "800 years of Gauldin History"..The eight children of John (Matthew) Gaulden II and Elizabeth Geers are listed below: (according to Dr. Gaulden)

LIZABETH TURNER:
(Possible geneology of Elizabeth Turner, from--)

1. Anthony Turner m. Winifred ---. Children: 2.
i Richard Turner b. May 1648. Second
Generation 2. Richard Turner b. May 1648, Cornwall, England, m. Abigail ---.
Richard died late 1730s, Maryland. Richard is listed in the Caroline
County Virginia Order Book as giving property to his four sons in the late
1730's. Apparently sons John and Richard died before their father as son
James inherits Richard's remaining estate as eldest son with son Lewis and
daughter Margaret acting as executors. Under English law, a woman would not
have been executor if there was another living son. Children:
i Lewis Turner. ii Margaret Turner. 3. iii
James Turner b. ca 1682. iv Richard Turner b. ca 1685,
England, d. bef 1740, Caroline Co., VA?. 4. v
John Turner b. ca 1690. Third Generation 3.
James Turner b. ca 1682, England?, m. ? unknown. James died date unknown,
Bedford Co., VA (?). James moved to the Bedford County, Virginia area. The
connection of James of Bedford County, Virginia to Richard Turner of
Caroline County, Virginia is based on review of the Caroline County Order
Books by several researchers. This research has led some to connect James
and John as sons of the same Richard. This is the family link shown herein.
Other researchers claim these as two distinct lines, one from England the
other Scotland. I have includedthe connected family here as the families
seem to remain together through their movements. All of these Turners moved
west. This moved located James' and John's families in the adjacent counties
of Bedford and Henry. Children: 5. i James
Turner b. cir 1700. 4. John Turner b. ca 1690, Lands End, Cornwall, England,
m. 1-Jul-1718, in Queen Anne's Parrish, Prince George Co., Elizabeth
Brashears, b. 27-Jul-1699, Prince George Co., MD, (daughter of Samuel
Brashears and Ann Jones) d. 1794. John died ca 1742, Caroline Co., VA.
Elizabeth d. about 1744. Whether Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego were
actually sonsof John Turner or were even born in Caroline County, Virginia
is still unsubstantiated. What is known however is that Shadrack and Meshack
were brothers. Some people claim to have extended the family line further.
Researchers making the connection to Richard and to the children below
base their work on information taken from the Caroline County, Virginia
Order Book from 1744. Based on the assumption that John died before the 1742
probate of Richard Turner's estate, the death of his wife around 1744
resulted in their children being assigned to a guardian. The 1744 Order Book
lists Meshack, Abednego, Sarah, Elizabeth and Ann with guardianships. It is
supposed that Shadrach would already have been 16 at the time and no longer
needing a guardian. Elizabeth: Her family begins with Barthelemy De Jorcas
Brassier (b.1498, d.1527) and wife Esprite Choiselant(1507-1530) both in
France. The spelling of thefamily -1-
name changed from Brassier(3generations) to Brashears for Elizabeth and her
7 siblings. Children: 6. i Shadrach Turner b. cir
1720. 7. ii Meshach Turner b. abt 1725. iii Abednego
Turner b. aft 1729, Caroline Co., VA, d. unknown, South
Carolina?. An Abednego is listed in the 1800 census of
Abbeville, SC. He was previously associated with 1770 Henry
County, Virginia land records and Wilkes County, Georgia
records according to those records in SC. iv ELIZABETH TURNER b.
ca 1730, Caroline Co., VA. v Sarah Turner b. ca 1732, Caroline
Co., VA. vi Ann Turner b. ca 1735, Caroline Co., VA.
Fourth Generation 5. James Turner b. cir 1700, Virginia,
m. cir 1725-30, in unknown, Mary Admire. James died unknown, Buckingham
Co., VA. Walter Hopkins of Richmond, VA published this line of Turners cir
1940. Info supplied through letters written in 1940 by Alva N. Turner of
Ina, Illinois to Mr. J.K. Gilley, Ridgeway, VA. Copies in Library in
Bassett, VA. Mr. Turner was a descendant of James Turner and states that
this Turnerline came from England. Further states that he knew nothing of
Shadrach Turner, other than he "might have come from Scotland."
