Joseph Goulet left home at the age of eleven for Lakes Region of Northern Minnesota, moved to Saint Paul in 1861and worked on Mississippi River Steamers in 1862 and 1863. He gave assistance to settlers at Fort Ripley, Crow Wing County, during the Indians uprisings after the Civil War and then returned to the river boats for work. He was a successful farmer at Hancock, Minnesota in the 1890's.
