Robert Allen Carter was the 1st volunteer in Stanly Co ,NC. He became captain of 42nd Co.C in 1864 at the Battle of Cold Harbor.His gold headed ebony walking stick that he received from the family of the fallen Federal Captain Julius Bassett is in the NC Archives.
