Notes for August Otto Genzel:
August Otto Genzel came to America from a town called Muhlhausen which was
located in Prussia, Germany. Otto worked his way over to America, leaving
Germany and going to Glasgow, Scotland where he boarded the vessel, "The
Furnessia" on or about the 17th day of March, 1906. This was the beginning of
the Genzel Family in America.
On the 13th day of March, 1911, Otto declared his intention to become an
American citizen. At this time he was living at 222 East 87th Street in New
York. By this time, Otto had met Annie Susan Sternecker, the daughter of Albert
and Barbara Sternecker of Bavaria, Germany and they were married in 1911.
They moved to 405 East 34th Street in New York and on March 02, 1915 some
five years and three children later, both Otto and Annie became citizens of the
United States. There is no separate application for Annie as she was
naturalized on the petition of Otto.
Otto worked at the New York Cotton Exchange for W. R. Grayson Cotton
Company and held a seat on the Cotton Exchange as a inspector. He worked in New
York from 1911 to Jan. 1920 when he was transferred to the Dallas Cotton
Exchange in Dallas, Texas. The family joined him in Texas on July 4, 1920.
Otto worked there until 1939 when he went to work for the Texas Cotton Growers
Assoc. which was about 9 months out of the year, from 1939 to 1941.
Otto had not been well for some time, so the family moved from Waverly
Street and bought a small grocery store and gas station with living quarters
attached which was located on Old Seagoville Road just outside of Dallas. The
family lived at the small store from 1921 to 1923 some two years before opening
the store. After living at this address for an unknown amount of years they
built a big home right up the street from the store.
Otto and Annie did well adjusting to the new life in Texas but the children
did not fare so well. Their trouble was speaking only German and none of the
other children understood, so the fights broke out. Otto made a rule that no
more German was to be spoken.
As Otto's condition had worsened they decided to move into Dallas. They
lived at 4519 Verdun Street and at this address Otto had a heart attack. He was
taken to Methodist Hospital where he died on Feb. 13, 1943.

  Notes for Annie Susan Sternecker:
After the death of her husband, Otto Genzel, Annie lived some 19 years. She
sold her home on Verdun Street which she paid $2,800.00 and received $9,500.00.
She moved to Bonita Street and bought a home for $8,000.00. She then bought a
home at 5458 Richmond Ave. for $7,500.00. She rented a room to Mr. L. H. Barry
for about a year and on Dec.21,1946 Annie and Mr. Barry were married at
Weatherford, Texas. Annie and Barry both lived at this address until their
death. Annie was 77 years old at the time of her death. She was only sick for
three weeks when she died of Acute Leukemia.
