Notes for Jefferson Rush Shannon:
In 1921, Jeff Shannon moved his family from Atlas, Texas to Paris, Texas.
Jeff went to work for Humble Oil Company and later bought a Humble Gas Station
located across the street from present day Farmers Market on West Sherman St.
In the 1930's, Jeff was picking blackberries along the railroad tracks and
was hit by a train, severing his left hand at the wrist. He was left handed.
At the time of his death, Jeff was working at Camp Maxey Army Base in the PX.
He was living at 93 North 20th Street in Paris, Texas. The cause of death was
Cardio - Renal failure.

9. Frances Etta Brackeen, born January 15, 1846 in Atlas, Lamar County, Texas; died June 24, 1918 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas ¹⁰. She was the daughter of 18. James Madison Brackeen and 19. Miranda Shelton.

Notes for Joel Johnson Shannon:
Joel Johnson Shannon was born Jun.09, 1829 in Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri. After his father died in 1839, Joel is found at home until his mother died in 1861. Joel server in the Civil War in Company H, Wells Regiment, under General McCulloch. He was discharged in April 1865. He was detailed as a Blacksmith in Paris,Texas. (see Records of the Adjutant General's office, Confederate Soldiers of Texas, roll # 219 Micro Copy # M323 Dallas, Texas. Gen. Library)
*According to the Civil War Regimental Information System Well's Texas Cavalry was organized by the consolidation of Well's Texas Cavalry Battalion, Good's Texas Cavalry Battalion and Gillett's Texas Cavalry Battalion in early 1865. It was soon dismounted. This regiment also erroneously claimed to be the 34th Texas Cavalry. It surrendered at Galveston 2 Jun 1865.
On April 02, 1865 he married Frances Etta (Brackeen) Vining, at Paris, Texas. Fannie was the daughter of James Madison Brackeen and Myranda (Shelton) Brackeen. Joel and Fannie lived in Atlas, Texas where all 9 of their children were born. Fannie had 2 children from a previous marriage to Milton
Vining. Joel died just 3 months before his last son, Jeff, was born. Joel Johnson Shannon died Jan.17, 1886 and is buried at Brackeen Cemetery, Atlas, Texas. After his death, Fannie married G. W. Martin and had 1 child. When G. W. died, she married James W. Cook. Fannie died Jun.24, 1918 and is buried as the wife of Joel J. Shannon at Brackeen Cemetery.
Joel Johnson Shannon was named after his Great Uncle, Richard Mentor Johnson
who was the Vice President of the United States under President Van Buren.

Notes for Frances Etta Brackeen:
Fannie Brackeen was married 4 times and out lived all four husbands. She was married 1st to Milton W. Vining, 2nd to Joel Johnson Shannon, 3rd to G. W. Martin and 4th to James W. Cook. When she died her legal name was Cook but she was buried as a Shannon, beside her 2nd husband, Joel Johnson Shannon at the Brackeen Cemetery, Atlas, Lamar County, Texas. Her marker reads, Fannie Brackeen, wife of J. J. Shannon. Her obituary is also in the name of Mrs. Fannie E. Shannon.

The epitaph on the tombstone reads:
"Her happy soul has winged it's way to one pure bright eternal day."

Deed book T2 page 290 recorded at the Lamar County Court House, Paris Texas reflects Fannie as the daughter of James Madison and Myranda Shelton Brackeen and the grand daughter of Jesse Shelton.

Fannie married Milton W. Vining in 1860. Lamar County Marriage Records Book 3, p. 261 shows Joel J. Shannon married Fannie E. Vining on 2 Apr 1865. See record of Joel J. Shannon.

Marshall Greene Smith was born Jul.28,1845 in Jacquline, Miller County,
Missouri. He died Jul. 28,1927 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas. The records of
Lamar County hospital in Paris, Texas, show that M. G. Smith was admitted on
Apr.06,1926 and again on Dec.03,1926 and a third time on Jul.04,1927 at which
time surgery was done by Dr. Robert L. Lewis for a "strangulated hernia".
Marshall died of complications of this surgery. At the time of his death he was
83 years old. His address was listed as 132 Parr Ave. in Paris, Texas which was
the home of his daughter, Emma May Smith Shannon. Marshall was married several
times, first to a woman whose name is unknown at this time. They had 3
children. He married 2nd to Martha Jane Thompson who is said to have been a
full blooded Cherokee (no proof). Marshall and Martha had 10 children. The other
marriages are unknown at this time. It has been said that Marshall was a
blacksmith, a shoe cobbler, and a Church of Christ Minister.

Information from Carolyn Shannon Genzel, 20 Feb 1999, Rt. 2 Box 240-A5, Cooper, Texas 75432, E-mail: : Marshall Greene (most every record says 'M. G.') Smith born July 28, 1845 in Jacquline, Miller County, MO and died July 17 (19?) 1928 in Paris, Lamar County, TX. He was buried at Highland Cemetery, Durant, OK. He was the son of Marshall Smith. He married second to Martha Jane Thompson born Jan 22, 1865 in Hawkeye, Pulaski County, MO. She died Feb. 12, 1912 in Durant, OK (she is also buried at Highland Cemetery, Durant, OK. Children were: Emma May; Louella Pearl; Arthur J.; David Elmer; Rosie Lee; Jewel Irene; Ester; Beulah I. T.; Homer Dan; and Robert Ernest Smith. His occupation is stated as a Blacksmith. Family tradition also says he was a Shoe Cobbler. My father, George V. Shannon, has always said that he shawd horses one day and people the next. At the time of death his address was stated as 132 Parr Ave. Paris, TX. This was the address of his daughter, Emma May (Smith) Shannon. M. E. Brown was the funeral home in Paris that shipped his body by train to Durant.

Notes for Arthur J. Smith:
Arthur J. Smith was born Aug.31,1892 and died Nov.09,1934. He is buried at
Highland Cemetery at Durant, Oklahoma. He killed himself after a confrontation
with the police in Durant. It has been said that Arthur had an affair with a
very young girl who became pregnant. His wife whose name is unknown, had
learned of this and was leaving him. Arthur held her hostage until the police
arrived at the couples home. Arthur is said to have killed his wife and escaped
only later to kill himself when the police caught up to him. He was under the
Durant underpass when he shot himself in the head, dying instantly. It is
thought that Arthur and his wife had 2 children. It is not known what happened
to the young girl or the child she was expecting.

David Elmer Smith was born Sep.12,1895. He moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico in the
early 1940's. He was responsible for his sister, Jewel, and family moving to New
Mexico in 1942. He is also thought to have been in some movies made in
Hollywood, California.

Esther Smith was born Dec.30,1902 and died in 1932 from stab wounds he had
gotten in a barroom fight in Lubbock, Texas. He managed to return to Durant
before dying.
