| I'm just getting interested in the field of genealogy. Other than just trying to get "current" generation data, I personally haven't done much. However, an aunt of my maternal grandfather (Ward Boardman JONES) hoped to prove that the family came over on the Mayflower, so she did extensive research. Turns out that they did not arrive on that august ship, but in 1630 the STEARNS arrived on the Good Ship Arabella, which, incidently, carried Governor Winthorp's wife. This is from the Jones side of my family. The GEVING'S hail from Norway. Grandfather John was born in Iowa, but his father, Per, left Hell, Norway as a boy. My understanding is that there were four "branches" of Geving's from the "old country" and after emigrating here, some went to Iowa, Minnesota, or North and South Dakota. My Grandfather, John, was born July 7, 1882 in Decorah, Iowa. To confuse matters, there were two "PER Geving's", one of which was grandpa's father. I would be grateful for any and all information you might have. Please e-mail me. When I first became interested in the generations that came before me, I remember I asked my father the names of HIS grandparents. He looked a little startled and said "I don't know. We just called them 'Grandpa' and 'Grandma'!" So it became evident that keeping track of my forebears could be a daunting task! Joyce |
